VS X3 .avi codec problem

Post by FantomLord »

Hi i need help

first I would like to point out that i did not have this problem with X2 its only been a problem with Video Studio X3 Pro

When ever i go to convert a video in the share tab I go t create video file and then the Costom option I choose (save as type) and choose .avi which is my prefered format and then when I go to options to choose the codec as soon as I go to the >AVI tab the whole program crashes and closes saying nothing as to why, I can convert .avi video by choosing same as first clip but i prefer to use my divx codec to do it and weak the settings since I have the latest Divx Pro codecs and player and since I cant do this anymore the whole point of having this program has gone out the window because as I said i cant use my prefered codec

Can someone help
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate if that helps

Thanks for any help you can Give

X3 -- and indeed X2 -- and DivX is a bit of a headache. The last version which could be made to detect and use the *latest* version of the DivX codec was VS 11.5+, and even then you had to change one of the data files. That fix no longer worked in X2 since that data file was not part of X2, and no one ever seemed to develop a workaround for that. But at least X2 came with an ancient version of the DivX codec -- version 5.4 I think it was, and that, of course, could not do high def video.

However, it seems that Corel decided to drop even that degree of support with X3, and it cannot detect recent versions of the DivX codec if loaded separately onto your computer. That being said, I have found that if you have the Xvid codec on your computer, X3 can detect and use that, if it is of any use. And just the other day I installed Movie Factory 7 Pro, which I have had for a couple of years on an older computer, on this one. It comes with an option to install DivX, so I chose that. And it seems to have affected X3 as well, since it now shows DivX as well as XVid when I choose .avi as my output format.

However, the version which was installed is 6.6.1 which dates from 2007. This would be consistent with MF 7 which came out late in 2007 or early 2008. But if you install that version, there is a good change X3 will see it -- again, if that is any use to you.

But I have not yet found any way to get X3 (or X2) to see the latest version...

Hmmm ... this seems to be my lucky 10,000th post on this Forum...

But after posting the above, I went to check which version of DivX I had apart from the 6.6.1 apparently installed by MF 7 Pro. And found that was the only version on this computer. Then I recalled that I had only recently installed Windows 7, and as a clean install, it had wiped everything that was on the computer beforehand. That of course included the latest version of Div X Pro (labelled version 7 in the installation process). Since I knew that on my previous Vista OS on this computer, that never worked with X3 or X2, I had not gotten around to reinstalling it.

So I just did, and miracle of miracles, X3 detected it immediately! It shows as version 6.8.5 which as you probably know was nonetheless the first version sold as DivX 7 -- though I have not yet acquired the very latest version which I see advertised on the DivX website. X2 and X3 could definitely never see this version under Vista.

More to the point, though, I don't know whether X3 can only see this version because MF 7 installed some common file which it shares with X3 and allows X3 access to the latest (or recent) DivX versions.

I will now download the current version of DivX -- which I see is now listed as version 8.0 -- and see if that also is seen by X3.

After a minor hassle with my credit card (I had to buy the new version of the DivX Converter, though had already bought the Pro version of all the rest), I successfully downloaded and installed DivX 8 (though the codec version number is 6.9.2). And I am happy to report X3 sees it and uses it. (In fact, it seems that the Converter is labelled vesion 8 and that may be the reason why my previous purchases did not cover this element.)

I experimented with it briefly in X3, converting a 1920 x 1080i AVCHD file to a DivX HD 1080i file. It worked quickly and efficiently. It reduced the size of the original file by more than half (49 MB vs 22 MB) with no diminution in quality that I could detect with my naked eye.

Hi Ken,

I read through your posts and am somewhat lost to be truely honest.
I am most interested in purchasing X3, however I am dependent on DivX support.

In the end, do you feel that the DivX required Movie Factory 7 Pro to function or that you simply needed to update it with a new version, because as you stated it I was unsure on the final idea.
I do infact have a license to DivX Pro, I do not have one to Movie Factory, and would prefer to have to install as small as possible to get something like this running correctly.

I appreciate your help in the matter.

Thanks :)

Thats nice to see, does it compress well and allow you to configure it fully? I am still trying to choose between This and Pinnacle.

EDIT: Am running the 'Full Trial' and it does not come up for me, I too have DivX pro installed.

Small test done:

It would appear to offer reasonable compression..

Defaults used for DIVX conversion.

It would appear to give all the DIVX options?

That is great but I cannot even get DivX as a option on the dropdown.

I have used virtual dub (free) for a bit and it shows on that clearly.

I really believe that it is because of the MF 7 SE installation that you get the DivX to show up. That and X3 SP1 are the points in common that Accolades and I share...

Which SP1 are you talking about exactly, and is MF7 free to fix this issue?

I'll be honest, If I need to install a third party program to get support for DivX, then I might just go for pinnacle.

The problem I see is that DivX is one of the most popular formats out there, for example I use FRAPS to record in game which uses DivX. If a great product like this cannot support that, then I feel it no longer meets my requirements in such a product.

Any assistance in clearing up a method of getting DivX to work easily may allow me to choose Corel, otherwise I am unsure of my decision at this point in time.

As I said 'X3 SP1', and as this is the X3 forum, I rather think I was referring to SP1 of X3! It has just been released properly recently (the previous effort was another Corel farce). But it seems to have fixed a few things. However, I would note that my own success with DivX 8 above came before I successfully managed to install SP1, but after I had installed Movie Factory, so I think having MF 7 on your computer is more important than SP1 in the DivX stakes. And yes, MF 7 SE is free to registered owners of X3...

Alright, so the trial probably doesnt have SP1 installed on it?

And I cant seem to find MovieFactory on the corel website, is it something only visible to registered users?

THanks for all your help so far, I am now leaning towards corel.

No -- the trial version will definitely not have SP1 in it -- not unless Corel has radically changed its normal modus operandi!

And yes, you will only get access to MF7 SE once you buy and install, then register, X3. Normally, you would then have to wait three days for it to become available through the Do More tab in X3, but there now seems to be a separate link for it in one of the sticky posts above... or else it is installed through the Update process.
