Welcome to the Forums!

In general, yes, it is possible to burn HD video to a DVD. But first you need to tell us what kind of DVD you are talking about. Are you wanting just a normal standard definition DVD which will play in any old DVD player? Or are you wanting to burn AVCHD or HDV as AVCHD but using a standard DVD?

We also need to know which version of Video Studio you are using.

If you are just wanting to convert the HD to standard definition DVD, then after you finish your editing you choose Share > Create Video File > DVD if your project is less than one hour. Then you open the burning module, insert your new video file, build your menu and burn. I'll go into more detail if you confirm that this is what you are wanting to do.

If you have AVCHD video, and want to burning it as AVCHD but on a standard DVD, you are wanting to burn what is called a hybrid disc. In effect you create a Blu-Ray BDMV-type folder on the DVD. But it can only play back on a rated Blu-Ray player or Sony PlayStation 3... Again you finish your editing, but then choose Share > Create Video File > and here I usually choose 'Same As First Clip'. That way you get a new AVCHD files with exactly the same properties, and importantly quality, as the original. Then you open the burning module, build your menu and burn.

If you have HDV and want to do the above, then you have to finish your edits, then choose Share > Create Video File > AVCHD. Then when you have that new file, proceed as above.

You can also burn AVCHD or HDV to a standard DVD as a data file. But you won't get any menu, and you have to have a player which can detect video on such a disc and play it. And you don't use Video Studio for that but any program that burns data files to disc, including Nero.

thanks for the responds. i have videostudio x2 and using a kodak zi8 mini camcorder. when it is uploaded to videostudio, it is a .MOV file. i actually made a 7 minues dvd using the hd footage from my zi8 but didn't come out right. there were some like small moving stripes on some parts of the video. what i did was basically put together all the 720p footage, click share, create file, dvd format, then burn to standard definition disc(dvd). i wanted to be able burn the hd footage to a standard definition disc.

The MOV file format tends to be troublesome when you try to edit it.
I have found that it is best to convert it to MPEG2 first.
Here is a FREE conversion Program (Super)

Yes, that would be the normal course of action. But as Steve says, Video Studio seems to have difficulties with .mov files. Moreover, by already producing a DVD, you have already done the conversion from .mov to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 using VS and it did not work properly. That is the point we were trying to make. So you use the program Steve suggest to first convert the .mov to mpeg-2 outside VS, then simply open the new mpeg-2 in VS for editing and authoring...

Thanks for the tips guys. I guess i would need to buy the AVS converter to get the full version? I tried the non-activated version and when it's converted it shows the software logo.

No need to buy anything. Steve gave you a link to a very good free piece of software.
This is the link again: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
When you get to the file I think you just hit the download button for the AVS converter. Forget that and scroll right down the page until you see: "Start Downloading SUPER © right now and discover this fully featured Multimedia Freeware."
Click on that for the 'Super' program

Thanks for the link but i'm afraid it looks too complicated for me. AVS converter does convert with exact quality of original file except you would need to buy the softare to remove the logo. I found a couple of free .mov converters. This one http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html - converts .mov to avi. Converts with great result. Can i import avi file to Videostudio then? AVI file though makes the file bigger. Here is one that converts .mov to mpeg but not as good as AVS. http://download.cnet.com/Any-Video-Conv ... ?tag=mncol

Obviously you have to convert again to MPEG2 to burn to DVD. That will be your second conversion, and each one leads to some sort of quality loss. But quality is in the eye of the beholder, so you will have to be the judge.

The general rule is to minimize the number of conversions. (DVDs are MPEG-2, so AVI requires an extra conversion.)

"AVI" is not a single format. It's a "container" or "wrapper" format and it can hold audio/video files using any type of compression. If you are using AVI/DV (13GB per hour), this is a very-good format for editing and you are unlikely to notice any quality loss from the extra conversion. If you use one of the more-compressed AVI options, you might notice the quality loss.

AVI file though makes the file bigger.
Don't worry about your intermediate file size. The size of the MPEG-2 file on the DVD depends on the bitrate and program run-time.

Well said DVDdoug. i think i'll go purchase AVS converter as it converts .mov to mpeg pretty well. it's offering $59 with unlimited access and no renewal fee. Unless you guys have other good software that is free and not as complicated as SUPER. Thanks for all the tips!

I should note here that AVS Converter was NOT the recommended conversion program mentioned above. That was SUPER. The link to AVS Converter that you obviously found on the SUPER site, is a paid link. You have to ignore that and scroll down to the bottom of the page to download the free SUPER program.
