Popping sound in video

Post by BoogeyRATT »

Hey all. So, I just joined the website but I've been using VS X2 Pro for a little while. I'm not great with it, but I can do what I need to. =) So here's the deal... I like to run FRAPS and record game play and put it to music or whatever. It's fun, it makes me feel creative... *shrugs*

So! Here's what's going on. I have a 4GB video file, raw AVI format from FRAPS, drop it into VS, and if I hit play... it plays great! Perfect. I click on "Share" and it unselects the video from the Timeline and if I preview it here... it immediately starts this "popping" noise which pops basically once every second on the second (it happens right at the second transition... so 1.29 to 2.00, 2.29 to 3.00, etc). If I select the video in the Timeline it goes back to the "Edit" tab and I can play it fine here. If I unselect the video though (click on the empty Overlay line) and preview, it starts popping again. I've rendered a few different videos with the popping noise in it, and even used the "Split Audio" option... no popping if the audio is selected, popping if it's not. Removed the video, and created a WAV format file from just the audio, and it has the popping!

Closed out of VS X2, downloaded and installed the patch, still no help.

Last thing... the video file is fine, I can play it in any number of other video playing apps with no issues, it just seems to be VS X2 that has the problem.)

I did try searching the forum for this issue but most of the posts were years old. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

(Also, here's a pic of the popping audio "spikes". You can see that the first few are softer than the remainder, but this should illustrate it pretty well.)

Welcome to the forums!

Can you right click on one of the avi files and select Properties, then tell us exactly what the audio format is, please.

Sometimes in the past, when I captured DV/AVI in another program using the Type 2 Encoder, then opened it in VS for editing, I too would get pops like you describe, but I suspect that was VS not really liking Type 2 DV -- or at least Type 2 which it had not captured. But it does not sound as though this is the problem with you since you are using raw AVI, which as you would know is huge and takes up about 65 GB per hour of video.

But other people in the past who have had the popping sound in other formats have simply change the audio setting from the default 100 to either 101 or 99, and the popping seems to have disappeared. You might want to try that... :?:

A couple of other programs you can try for extracting the audio to a separate file:

SUPER (FREE!!!). It's is a universal audio/video conversion tool that also allows you to make an audio-only file. It's a little tricky, because there are no instructions or help, but it's saved me from some difficult problems.

AoA Audio Extractor (FREE!!!). I haven't used this one.

Thanks Doug! If worst comes to worst I'll go that route... but I'm hoping to figure out what the problem is as opposed to figuring out how to not let the problem bug me. ;-)

Here's a screen shot of my video properties file.

If I do the "split audio" option first, the properties screen is the same.

I, on the other hand, usually find it more expedient to find a workaround rather than the cause to a problem.

Of course, but I'm not looking for expedience at the moment. Plus, who knows, this issue may cause other problems that wouldn't be solved by that specific work around. =)

I've not. I was hoping for an actual solution for the problem but I suppose just an extra step is better than not being able to do anything at all. =) I'm installing Super right now.

That was exactly my point when I said

I was able to rip the sound to an MP3... I've yet to try using that as the sound source in VS though. Probably tomorrow.

Well... this did prevent the popping from occurring... but ripping the audio to an MP3 also took quite a bit from the quality of it. =(
Any suggestions on actually fixing the problem?

What kind of quality are your MP3s set for? For instance, in iTunes you can set it for varying degrees of quality.

I never have heard poor quality from my MP3s.
