Using The Text Tool in PSP X3

Post by dmiller »

I have been an avid user of PSP since version 5. Once I got use to PSP12 it was OK so I upgraded to PSPX3, right now I'm not happy with all the changes. I went to use the text tool and there was no text box. It types RIGHT on the image, no way to move the text, no floating area to move, I set to vector and No vector boxes. At this point I'm not a happy customer. Unless there is an easy answer as to why the text box does not work like it use to I'm uninstalling it and going back to an older version. Right now I feel I wasted my money!

There was huge desire from much of the community for "on-image text editing". In the previous "wishlist" for what the community thought PSP should have there were a number of requests for this very feature. And we got it.

And all of the options you had previously are still there as far as I'm aware. The options have been slightly reordered or pushed aside but they are still all there.

If you want the textbox back hold down the Shift key as you click on the image.

Now I'm not sure what you mean by no vector boxes when you set it as vector. But I get the exact same results from setting it as vector in X3 as I did in X2. As soon as I accept the text changes it selects the vector text and allows me to move it around.

It's really nice this way as you can see how the text works with the rest of the image without that annoying text box in the way.

Editing text in X3 does support text box BUT you have to press key shift (ctrl/alt ... I do not remember) and then click on image. It support reediting of writen text in text box also. Works fine.

Today was my first day with PSP X3 and I was cussing at the loss of the text editing box. I contacted Corel through chat support and the idiot (Reste in Customer Service) who was on the other end seemed to have no clue about this "simple" way to get the text box up (hitting the Shift key). He acknowledged the tool had changed, but offered no clue as to a workaround. Glad I stumbled upon it here.

I'm not sure why the "community" thought this was an "improvement." Frankly, I prefer the old way it worked in PSP X2. I for one would recommend that Corel think hard about making such "improvements" without somehow alerting their loyal customers things have changed (and providing a list of those changes.) It's stuff like this that alienates long-time PSP users who find when they "upgrade" that they're faced with relearning the program. Too many of these undocumented changes might cause a guy to ask for a refund! Hope I don't encounter too many more!

These changes are listed right on the website. I was excited to hear that text on the image would be included before X3 was even available for download.

What website? Where? (URL please). How would a purchaser ( or prospective purchaser) know where to look? Worse, why didn't the Customer Service rep who I chatted with on the Corel Site seem to know this little trick to make the Text Editor box appear?

How about on the Corel Website? How about on the Paint Shop Photo Pro webpage? How about under the What's new tab? It's right there. It's readily visible.

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab1

But I suppose you'd have to actually like reading up on the changes to figure out what's going on.
Worse, why didn't the Customer Service rep who I chatted with on the Corel Site seem to know this little trick to make the Text Editor box appear?
I will gladly admit that the customer service needs help. But this is nothing new. The reps need to be trained in the different things, and quickly. Small things like this may not come up for the tiny percentage of people who don't like the new feature. I'm sorry it upsets you but a lot of people have been asking for this for a long time. They listen to the majority if they listen at all.

Ya gotta think that particularly with something like this where a feature has been changed that many of the Customer Support calls would be about stuff like this, no? Kind of a FAQ? When training your support staff Corel, start with determining what are the FAQ's and then be sure that your support people know the answers to these things for starters. You can pretty much also figure that if you change anything, users of previous versions may puzzle over what has happened. Be sure your support staff know about all such changes and are ready with answers.

Gee... this seems so simple... Do you need to hire me as a "consultant" to teach you how to offer better Customer Service?

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm not saying the complaints aren't semi-reasonable. But you're really throwing this out of proportion.

Maybe they didn't think people wanting to get the textbox back would come up in the frequently asked questions. It's all hearsay as to what is going on or why something is going wrong. None of use work at Corel. But even big name companies with great customer service have had these problems. So no they don't need you as a consultant. I don't know how long it will take, you may get frustrated enough and leave long before they do, but they will work it out. They will get better. If you have specific complaints, talk to Corel. Probably won't get much done, but you'll get a lot more done than complaining here.

I got married and am trying to change my name on business cards etc. I am so frustrated with the text tool. I have read the program help several times and items it says are there; aren't. It says in the Create as list box to set it as vector...I can find no creat as list box anywhere. Also on move your text it said to select offset on the tools pallette. Not there. Please help. Click on the shift didn't give me a text box. I need to know how to set my image as vector and how to get the text box.. I have been using PSP since version 4 and could always find answeres in the help section.

The text tool tool options panel is too long to fit in to most displays It has some tiny left pointing arrows at the joints that will expand the tool bar to allow you to see more options http://www.trevorbowden.co.uk/Test/texttool.jpg drag those circled bar left or right to show more options

Thanks for the help I got that far and got my new last name on the item. Now I need to make the last name floating so I can appy a drop shadow with super blade pro to make it match the rest of the writing. In 12 it was floating when you put it in. Will play with it some more before I go back to 12. This is something I use a lot so 12 is better than fighting X3 to get something done.

The options are "create as" Vector, selection or floating. if X3 is set to remember last used Then that drop down list will show the last used In all aspects but for being to type direct on the image the Text tool is the same in X3 as X

To adjust the position of text fitted to a path

Full Editor workspace

1 On the Tools toolbar, choose the Text tool .
2 Select the text whose position you want to adjust by dragging over it.
You can also select the entire text by pressing Ctrl + A.
3 On the Tool Options palette, set a value in the Offset control.
Positive values position the text above the path; negative values position the text below the path.
4 On the Tool Options palette, click the Apply button .

Moving text
You can move vector and raster text anywhere in an image. You can move the text after it is fitted to the path by selecting it and dragging it along the path. Corel PaintShop Photo Pro aligns text based on the nearest point where the text meets the path.

Important! To move raster text that is on a layer with other raster information, such as raster shapes or brushstrokes, you must isolate the text. You can use a selection tool, such as the Magic Wand tool, to select and move the text. For more information about making selections, see Creating selections.
To move text

Full Editor workspace

1 On the Tools toolbar, choose the Pick tool .
2 Click the text you want to move.
A bounding box surrounds the text.
3 Position your cursor over the selected text, until it changes its shape to a four-way arrow , and drag the text anywhere in the image.

You can also move text to another layer by cutting and pasting it onto another layer.
To move text along a path

Full Editor workspace

1 Choose the Pick tool .
2 Click the text you want to move.
A bounding box appears around the text.
3 Position your cursor over the selected text, until it changes its shape to a four-way arrow , and drag the text to the desired location.
As you drag the text, a small, square icon moves with it. This icon indicates one of the following:
• the start of the text if the text was left-aligned
• the midpoint of the text if the text was centered
• the end of the text if the text was right-aligned

hi guys,

i might just add ive just upgraded from x2 to x3 and the info about the text box is which i used in x2 is very useful.

i have a question tho i do a lot of dvd covers and when i come to do the synopsis for a dvd i use
a lot of text, i know psp pro is a bit of a cow as there is no justify tool so i use the Kerning tool a lot.

now heres my problem in x2 when using the kerning tool goes up in single units i.e 1 to 10 and so forth
so i can adjust the text line by line to fit in a space whatever i require. i hadno problem with it.

In x3 this does not happen as the kerning tool goes up in multiples of 10 i cannot adjust in single units
and also sometimes if for example i put 6 in the kerning box a line of text disappears and the 6 appears in the text any ideas?

hope i explained this ok

cheers Eric
