Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
I'm using X2 Ultimate and I can open my Canon 50D CR2 files but not the CR2 files from my Canon 7D. Is there a file somewhere I can download to get this to work? If not, will X3 open the Canon 7D CR2 RAW files?

Corel's RAW processors have a lot to be desired. X3 should open them, but you'll lose any in camera adjustments that you applied like Picture Style and sharpening. Personally I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional. You can have DPP send files directly to whatever program you choose, and you can retain or even apply different adjustments straight to the RAW file.
Most RAW files are Tiffs modified to suit the manufacturer to begin with, so converting the 7D's files to 16 bit Tiffs will get you very very close to what a RAW converter will give you in the first place.

Thanks for the prompt response. I too use DPP however, since it won't produce web suitable .jpg files, I have to use another app. When I have several hundred files to convert, PSP's script feature makes it the best choice. SuzShook created an excellent script for converting files to a specific size so that's what I use. I just need to be able to open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files.

I use PSP for some things then go back into DPP to do the final resizing myself.

Thanks a lot for that info. When I first started using a digital camera a few years ago it was all new stuff to me. I read some postings on the net that said to use DPP to convert to .tif then process the image in a photo editor so that's what I've been doing and its been working OK for me until I got the 7D. I'll start getting more familiar with the DPP software.df wrote:...since it won't produce web suitable .jpg files,...![]()

Huh? You do know that when you batch process in DPP you can specify the final size. You can even have different source sizes and it will make them all the same. I'm not trying to downplay PSP, but DPP will do that without a problem. About the only thing I can think of (from a sizing standpoint) that DPP doesn't do is a percentage, you have to specify a pixel count or a print size coupled with a dpi.

So, do you know if X3 will open Canon 7D RAW files or if there is someway to use X2 Ultimate to do it?

The 7D is supported by X3. I'd try downloading the trial, check to see if the patch is preinstalled, then try it out.
I just tried it with a few XTi RAW files that I just grabbed at random. Seems to be ok unless the exposure's off. I'll stick with DPP myself.
For a workflow I'd suggest that you use DPP for most of your easy edits, converting to Jpeg when you don't need any further edits, and PSP for anything that you need to work on further. Depending on your style you may just find yourself needing to work on more or less in PSP. When you do convert to Tiff for further editing you should convert to 16 bit Tiffs, especially if the shot is one that you're trying to rescue. 16 bit files contain so much more information than 8 bit files.
http://www.usa.canon.com/content/dpp2/index.html Here's a tutorial for Canon's DPP 3.2, the current version is 3.8 which now includes a tilt feature. On the 7D there's also things like Auto Light Optimizer which in basic terms the program automatically recovers the shadows of a particular lens's vignette at the edges, some call it falloff http://kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f18.htm#fo

Also a 7D owner here although I use CaptureOne for RAW processing (much better with RAW than PSP IMHO), export as 16 bit TIFF and do whatever I do in PSP before saving the final finished shot as JPEG. I did used to use DPP in the same workflow before I bought CaptureOne though (which was back in the day when I had a 40D).

Re: Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
I would like to give you my experience with this one. I bought Rebel T2i and shooting raw was great. Liking the corel products bought X3 unfortunately cant open raw files. Corel has answered on this but no fixes yetgrafxman1 wrote:I'm using X2 Ultimate and I can open my Canon 50D CR2 files but not the CR2 files from my Canon 7D. Hi grafxman
If you go to our knowledgebase and type "RAW", then you will get an overview about the supported cameras.
Here it is:
http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... R4T2gqag==
But it might refuse to support the CR2 files. Even CS4 has refused it.
Let me mention that I have escalated a colour problem with the RAW Canon D7 yesterday (Colours are a bit to colourful).

Re: Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
This is incorrect. All you have to do is apply the free update CS4 RAW to 5.7, it will open CR2 files quite easily. And this is with my Canon 550D CR2 files. And there is a usable beta version 6.1 for CS5 (the beta will work after the beta date, but you will get a nag message)Simone Corel UK

Corel PSP X2 ultimate, all I get is a magenta and black bar, that shows a small part of the photograph. Same thing with X3.

Re: Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
I found out while out of town, that not only will PSP X2 not open the 7D RAW files, neither will the older version of DPP (2.1?) that I have on my laptop. I have X2 and my old DPP on there, and X3 and the new version of DPP on my home machine, and the 7D creates RAW files that are not backwards compatible. I will be adding a little RAM and installing DPP on my laptop this weekend...I love my 7D but 22meg files will clean my old system's clock quickly...

Re: Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
All Camera raw files are camera spacific. In the header of the file it states the camera model. If the software does not understand that, As in a model that was released after the software It will not open it.

Re: Can't Open Canon 7D CR2 RAW files (X2 Ultimate)
If you have internet access you can update Canon's DPP. It just looks for one Canon program and if it finds one it installs the full program that you're trying to install. The later versions of DPP really are much better. Seperate Highlight and Shadow sliders (which isn't too big of a deal) and the ability to tilt images. Better noise controls as well as being able to use the ALO and lens corrections that your camera (the 7D) offers. You can also have DPP send to PSP directly as well.
