I don’t blame you not installing K-Lite, I was surprised when I found Corel recommending using it.
I have however installed it some time ago with no problems, but that’s on W7.
Its just I would not recommend if I hadn’t used myself.
Have you tried simply renaming the files changing the extension from MTS to M2T
To play my clips I use VCL Media Player, this seems to play most video types.
Do AVCHD files with MTS ext. work in VSX3?

You've answered everyone's question very clearly and I cant think what the problem could be. I've used K-lite previously just to play some video formats, but I think Codecs can be more harmful than useful. There are other ways to work around that issues. I guess it's just something small, may be a Windows 8 (I'm scared to say that) problem, but unfortunately I cant help you, I really hope you find your way out. Regards
