Do AVCHD files with MTS ext. work in VSX3?

Post by Sheep Cloner »

I am at my wit's end here! U completely reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) and fully updated my drivers, software, and directx. I Installed VSX3 and I cannot render my AVCHD files from my Sony SR11. I get a dump error that points to the AVCHD dll file. Tech support had no idea what to do and it was sent to engineering. I have used that last 5 versions of VS and my AVCHD files were fine with 11 and 12.

Are there users on here that are successful with Sony AVCHD files on Windows 7?

Does anybody have any clue what I could try next? I really don't want to switch to Adobe.

Thanks! ~Ken

I am afraid I cannot talk about Sony files, but I have plenty of experience with Panasonic SD-9 .mts files. I thought the problem with those had been solved with X3, and am thus surprised to hear you are not in that happy group!

One thing I learned with the Panny files, though, is that it is often better to import the files into your computer using the software which came with the camcorder. This will often convert the native .mts files to .m2ts AVCHD files. No quality is lost, but VS seems to have less difficulty with those than with the native files.

Thanks Ken, Can you recommend video conversion software that will batch convert files? I think I'd rather do that than use Adobe. What file format do you recommend I switch to? I only have problems rendering with AVCHD. ~Ken

It really all depends what you are wanting to do with the AVCHD -- for instance, are you trying to make a Blu-Ray disc, an AVCHD hybrid disc, or a standard definition DVD...

My main creation is an AVCHD file that I keep on my PC and stream to my XBox 360. But I will also need them for Blu-Ray authoring when I make things for friends/family.

As I said at the outset, have you tried the Sony software which would have come with the camera to at least import the video into your computer. If so, then it is likely to convert it to .m2ts AVCHD which should then be usable.

Ken, I tried the Sony uploader and it worked better. VS crashed at the end of the render and it yielded a file with the out of sync audio toward the end. I got worse as the video progressed. I think I read that this is due to transition errors. Any other advice?

Smart Render was turned off, but I have the same lip sync problem without VS crashing.

I'm not sure what more I can suggest. Normally I would just have said, with regard to the lip sync problem (and with AVCHD rendering generally), to make sure SmartRender was turned off. But you have already done that... :?:

But one question: when you have finished your editing, and want to render, what command under Share do you choose? Personally, in your situation I would be choosing Share > Same As First Clip.

I have a Sony CX110 which writes these MTS files and I do open them using X3 in Win7 32bit. I haven't had any lip sync issues, and I don't import them. I copy them directly from the SD card.

Well at last someone came up with the same problem I have. I mentioned this in another thread concerning VS's ability of handling HD. We have 2 Sony SR11 cameras. Both video formats .m2t (when transferring files from the camera to PC by copying and pasting via Windows Explorer) and .MTS (created by Sony's software) does not work. Sheep Cloner definately went one step further than what I could manage. I cannot even do a project playback from the timeline for more than 20sec without VS coming to a still stand. It hangs for hours is you leave it and you have to close the application via Task manager. Both versions VSX2 and the TBYB of VX3 do the same. I really don not want to repeat it but seems to me Sheep Cloner did not read the other thread, Magix can handle all these files with the greatest ease. That just showed me that their is nothing wrong with any settings that other users suggest to do. The ploblem lies with Video Studio. I concider Sony as one of the bigger suppliers of camcorder on the market. Unfortunately I am stuck with my HD files. Although Magix can also do iso it is not as userfriendly as Video Studio. I would be so pleased if Corel for one moment just listen to their CUSTOMERS' complaints and change VSX3's authoring part back to previous versions and solved the HD issues. I'm using VS for the past 5 versions why should I switch.

LE, Did you ever notice that the SR11/12 is the camera VS uses on their startup screen? How ridiculous that we are having these problems. I was forced to use Abobe Premiere Elements, which was flawless btw.

I saw the camera on the start up screen but there are so many Sony Models that look alike, so I wasn't sure that it was indeed the SR 11/12. I have Adobe CS3, but do not use Premiere. I just tried to figure it out for a few minutes some year ago, but I was so used to Video Studio's way of doing things that I just went on in my comfort zone. The same "zone" that I'm not feeling so comfortable with anymore. Thanks

I'm not sure that Premiere CS3 could handle AVCHD -- thought it might. That was before I started playing around with AVCHD. Certainly, CS4 could. But the problem is that if you want to output the project to AVCHD, it does so using an Adobe proprietary format (.m4v) and moreover splits the video from the audio and outputs the latter in a separate file. AFAIK, the only program that can read these and produce a disc is Adobe Encore... As for the recently released CS5, I have given up on that as it is only produced for 64 bit computers....

Just want to tell everyone struggling with HD files. Just after I converted all my HD files to standard and completing all the projects I re installed my VSX3TBYB version. When I opened it the first time after installation it automatically start with an update. I immediately imported HD files into a project and worked perfectly. I did the same with VSX2 and it worked. I did not render anything but am very pleased to see that it seems to handle HD now. If they can just go back to the old authoring style of previous versions I start looking forward to buy the new version.
Regards :)

The old authoring style of previous versions is precisely what Movie Factory 7SE uses, so download that and you should have no problems. The only thing is that you have to first render your project in X3 to a final file type, then insert that into MF 7 for authoring. MF 7 cannot read X3 project files... only final video formats.
