Hi All,
I searched for solutions to this problem and while I found reports on older S/W versions, I did not find a resolution that seems to fit my scenario.
Problem: When I connect my camera and select Capture Video, I receive the error:
Unable to switch to capture mode
Check if your video capture driver is working properly
15023:4:2
I select OK and it properly identifies my camera in source as Sony HDR-HC1
Using the VS S/W, I can play, ffwd, pause, etc the camera but it will not display the video in the VS window and of course I cannot Capture the video.
If I try this via Movie Wizard Mode, the error I receive is Capture Mode initialization failed
15064:20:0
I am running:
- Video Studio 12.0.98.1 Pro includes patch bundles SP1 and SP2 from the web site
- PC is an intel Q6600 w 4GB ram, 2 TB disk
- 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, patch current
- Sony HDR-HC1 connected via firewire
Please advise.
cheers,
Craig

Re: VS12: Capture Mode initialization failed
Since you get an error with two different apps I would look at the firewire cable or the card itself.

Re: VS12: Capture Mode initialization failed
Jeff -- I don't think he tried two different programs, just two different aspects of VS...
csinasac -- But in fact I would suggest you try another program. I personally always use a small freeware program called HDVSplit to capture from my Canon HV20 HDV camcorder. It works well and, as its name implies, splits incoming video by scene. You can do a Google search for it.
If that does, however, fail, then as Jeff suggests, I would be doing tests on your hardware.
I would also note that since your VS12 version ends with a 1, you have not fully updated it as it is meant to end in a 2... Check the patch site and ensure you have applied all relevant patches. A later patch does not necessarily include all that was in a former patch...

Re: VS12: Capture Mode initialization failed
Yes, thanks ... I used VS12 in different modes.
HDVSplit works just fine, so that means my H/W is fine. It complains about a missing audio codec, but it does record the audio and video.
Regarding the patches, there are only 2 on the web site ... SP1 and SP2. I have rerun them both and my version still ends with the 1. I ran SP1 first and then SP2 ... that is odd.

Yes. I interpreted Movie Wizard as Movie Maker.
Time for bed.

Re: VS12: Capture Mode initialization failed
On reflection, I think I may have been thinking of VS11.5 ending in 2... Definitely time for bed!!!
I've just looked at my version of VS12 and it too ends in 1!!
