Post by marty2010 »

Is it legal for internet on-line stores/businesses to sell download versions (not Boxed) of Corel?

Comment erased by myself due to the obvious and idiotic content contained. I thank you for your patience in this matter. :P

I read your post before you erased it, and I didn't see anything idiotic about it. It was 100% factual, only authorized retailers or resellers can...;)

I agree with Ron - I saw nothing wrong with your comments.
In fact marty2010 has passed me the link which I have since forwarded to Corel for clarification.
I did not want the link posted in the open in case it does go south. On face value the site does appear legitimate - however I am sure that many of us have seen similar looking "Legitimate sites" that are not. It is a matter worthy of further investigation.

Somewhat off-topic when it comes to Corel, but a case in point: well over a year ago, I bought a full version of Nero 8 from what appeared to be an authentic site in the UK with a good discount on the regular price offered by Nero itself. I registered the program with Nero, and never had any problems with it, updating as necessary. So then, when I last year saw the same site offer Nero 9, again at a good price, I bought it. And again registered it with Nero without difficulty. Indeed, this time, I used the S/N to join the My Nero community...

It was only some months later, when I went to update it, that I got a message saying it was a fraudulent copy. I of course queried this immediately with Nero, setting out the above in considerably more detail, but they were adamant that it was an illegal copy, despite having accepted the S/N for both registration and My Nero membership. (Indeed, it remains among my registered products on the My Nero website!!)

I am still angry about all this, but it is an object lesson for all of us. Needless to say, a couple of weeks ago, when I upgraded to Nero 10, I bought from the Nero store!!!!

You had to buy upgrades from JASC direct in there day, as you could only get one if you had registered a previous version. But Corel versions need to have a previous vesion installed. It checks for a legal copy and if it does not find one will stop the install

Really? The upgrade copies I have always install perfectly on my system without the previous version installed. I often lose the discs and I restart my system after every semester so I just install directly. Or am I missing something?

When you purchase an upgrade version of a Corel Product you do not need the previous version to be installed on that computer. What you will require is the serial number of the previous version. When you install the upgrade it will ask for both the new and the old serial numbers.

Then I've been buying the full versions at the upgrade price because that has not been required either. Unless the registration is what checks that for me.

I believe that when you register your current copy that it checks with Corel. That's where they keep track of it from what I understand. If you log into your account at Corel you should see all of your previous licenses listed.

Yes but I double checked, I'm not forced to register. I could simply tell it to never register me. I can understand them checking my purchase history before allowing me to buy the full version at upgrade pricing on their website as it would be automatic. But nothing about the software itself says I need a previous version to install the upgrades I buy from Corel.

VS does require at least the version qualifying for the upgrade, serial number. PSPP however since version X2 uses another method, that not only requires you enter your serial number, but also it requires activation. I've been through this a couple of times with X2. I've had to reinstall it, and learned that there is a 3x limit of reinstalling before you must contact Corel. This is a built in anti-piracy feature. The only way around this, is to be using a pirated version along with one of those Key-Generators. Re-formatting your HDD, will still require activation/contacting Corel..

Initially, I did not think it would be much trouble for their marketing department to confirm the sales internet site and product offer.

But to date, no final answer from Corel.

The email reply from Corel which I forwarded to you stated that sales from third parties are only boxed versions.
