Re: X3 not giving back memory
If this sounds rude, Steve, pleas know I intend no rudeness. I'm just not good with my words. But I'm very confused with the links you gave us.
Yeah, you know the tiny url wasn't required for the google search. Especially since you just used a text hyperlink anyway. But that's not important.
I searched through all of the results on the google search and they all basically said the exact same thing. However, in the comments a majority of people said it doesn't do anything to their systems. Regardless I tried it anyway. Didn't do anything. It didn't clear the memory of the currently active programs, or any of the memory actually.
And the other article...seemed to be more about a specific software related to this journalism group was actually maintained by one of its own writers and hailed as being a good way of dealing with memory. Unless I missed something, which is entirely possible I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, I'm not sure how any of this helps.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Also not intending to sound rude, but Windows does an exceptional and IMHO the best job of managing memory. In Microsoft Office programs it will tell me I have a huge amount of memory in the "clipboard" and/or the swap drive and asks me if I want to retain it when I close the program.sjj1805 wrote:There are various tips here for clearing the memory cache in Windows 7

Prior to Windows 2000 you used to be able to release unused memory with a registry hack
I don't remember ever having this problem going back thru the last 9 versions of PSP. In X2 I could have 5-10 edited raw (12-14mb each on the disk) file open at once, with several having multiple amount of saved "undos".
With X3, I have this memory problem with just 2 photos open - taking 1.5GB of ram.
I do not use the organizer at all (Picasa is about 200x faster) so no memory resources "should" be coming from it.
An additional issue I will post in the correct thread is how much slower X3 is compared to the identical tasks in X2.

Once again Steve, the problem here isn't the OS not mopping up unused memory after applications exit (which is what your first link deals with) but rather PSP X3 not releasing resources it no longer needs whilst its still running. The fix you've suggested would be appropriate if PSP X3 wasn't giving the resources back to the OS when you closed the actual application. With respect, you're barking up the wrong tree here.
And i'm sure you've also noted that in my tests with the prior version of PSP on exactly the same machine it is much, much better behaved.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Well Corel got back to me, kind of.
And how does this 'paid support' nonsense work? I'm a bit reluctant to have to be expected to pay to report a bug in software i've already paid for. Perhaps that's why they'd rather I ring than email them.
Not quite sure how i'm supposed to 'interact' with them given the software in question is on a machine at home and, like most other people, i'm at work during the day and their support line is basically 9-5 weekdays only. That's really handy. After carefully reviewing this incident it is recommended that you call into our technical support center for further assistance. E-mail is an alternative option for technical support on resolving minor issues. Due to the nature of this particular issue, and the need for interaction, contacting Corel directly via telephone will provide you with a quicker and more tailored solution for the issue you are facing.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Did your "bug" report to them give the test results (memory numbers) you did so they could verify it was in fact a Corel problem?
They should be able to duplicate the problem easy enough.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Unfortunately not, it took them a week for the non-response on the original bug report and I only did the metrics yesterday. I'll have to try and ring them next week and hopefully dodge being charged for the privilege.marty2010 wrote:Did your "bug" report to them give the test results (memory numbers) you did so they could verify it was in fact a Corel problem?

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Why not just e-mail a response with your "numbers" from your recent tests. And provide a "link" to this forum topic.
Better than waiting a week, real fast (the speed of e-mail) and no cost.
And, if you do not reply in 72 hours (as far as I know, normally) they will/could consider the problem "solved".

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Good point. I'd actually thought they'd closed the ticket but have now passed on the contents of my testing post and pointed them at this thread for further info. Will see what they come back with next.marty2010 wrote:Why not just e-mail a response with your "numbers" from your recent tests. And provide a "link" to this forum topic.

7 days since I last updated the ticket myself and 9 days since sending them the test observations and no further response as yet from Corel support.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Something I found today, did help a bit with the memory, not much but some.
un-ticking "Enable Auto-Preserve"
File>Preferences>General Program Preferences>Auto-Preserve
I also dropped my recent files to 1 file.
File>Preferences>General Program Preferences>Miscellaneous
I can't say for sure which actually did it.

Auto-preserve I have switched off anyway and the second thing you changed should only affect the number of entries on the most recently used files list I think.WebWeaver64 wrote:Something I found today, did help a bit with the memory, not much but some.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Just as an fyi, I didn't have auto-save on, but as I said I did see a difference after turning it off explicitly. Maybe 5k not much as I said, and not sure why either of those two would have made any difference.bigfatron wrote: Auto-preserve I have switched off anyway and the second thing you changed should only affect the number of entries on the most recently used files list I think.

Re: X3 not giving back memory
In any case, its not the basic memory footprint thats the issue here. Rather its the (non)releasing of memory as files are opened, manipulated and closed and the cumulative effect this has when you work on multiple images in a session. I've already tried turning pretty much everything off including the undo feature entirely and it still fails to manage memory at all as it should. Yet X2, with all these various 'safety' features switched on, behaves almost impecibly.WebWeaver64 wrote:Just as an fyi, I didn't have auto-save on, but as I said I did see a difference after turning it off explicitly. Re: X3 not giving back memory
Well the only update since I posted the test results to my original ticket was a couple of weeks of deathly silence and finally them adding 'This incident can no longer be updated' in the last couple of days.
I have now raised a second ticket referencing the unresolved issue of the first and enquiring if the issue is under investigation or just being ignored.
And is it a touch of humour that the first of the auto-response articles it shows you when raising a ticket is 'Title: How to remove completely PaintShop Photo Pro X3'?

Re: X3 not giving back memory
Well it probably is a frequently asked question.
Which reminds me I had meant to call their hotline about this very problem. I mean I still have those two advanced tech support tickets I'm allowed to use.
