X3 not giving back memory

Post by bigfatron »

I'm working with 16 bit TIFF files (about 100MB a piece). What appears to be happening is I open PSP X3, work with half a dozen images, then close them but PSP X3 still shows a high amount of RAM resources in Task Manager consistent with when the files were still open. You then open another file to work on it and get the 'not enough memory to complete this operation' message. Only solution then is to close PSP X3 and restart it before working.

Any ideas for sorting this or anyone know if its a bug thats being worked on?

Click Edit > Empty Clipboard and see if that gives you any memory back.

I'll give it a shot next time I do a shoot, although I should mention I was never actually copying anything to the clipboard in this process. It was a case of open 5 or 6 files, do stuff to them, save to JPEG and then close the files. Then when you open another couple of files you're suddenly 'out of memory'.

Definitely doesn't work, just tried it now after regenerating some TIFFs from old RAW files.

If you open an image and do nothing then it gives the memory back.

If you open an image and do stuff and then save it and close it then the memory isn't given back and the only way to sort it after a while is restart PSP. Very annoying.

I am having the exact same problem. I really regret spending my money to upgrade to this version. It looks good on paper, but this is a MAJOR issue and is affecting my work. This definitely needs to be addressed.

Sorry to hear that, although at least I now know its not just me! I know what you mean about the upgrade as its been largely 1 step forward and 2 or 3 back. At least I got it at the dirt-cheap early bird price. I'd be pretty pee'd off if i'd paid top whack for this, especially as I was hoping for something that was going to be a nippier/more polished version of X2.

I raised a ticket with Corel Support about it yesterday, although obviously not heard back as yet. I'll update here if anything comes of it.

I've never experienced this problem but that's probably because of the types of photo-editing I do.

While I don't edit large files very often, and not in large numbers or for extended periods of time, I did a quick test and can also vouch for this issue. Took a whole 2MB of my memory and never gave it back.

I think most of these issues come as a result of bad testing practices for this version. Otherwise I would imagine it would be spot on. *sigh*

I came to this board and registered today because of this exact problem. It's a problem because I can't save the current document and must C+A+Del to shut down the program and I lose everything I've done. I decided to change the settings of how much PSPX3 should save in the UNDO funcion, but my trial version ran out today so I couldn't check it. I will not buy the upgrade until there's a solution to this problem, even though PSPX2 was quirky for me too, especially regarding text. I really prefer X3's text functions, but I can't have this problem.

I will check back here to see if you hear anything from tech support. I've used PSP since version 8 and based on my experience, you'll not hear back from anyone.

FYI I had the same thought you did and I switched off the undo functionality completely and the problem still persists.

The support ticket is at least still showing and they've only just had the 48 hours now so i'll remain hopeful for now at least. Have downgraded back to X2 for now though (which certainly doesn't have this issue).

Have you tried disabling the auto save function in the preferences? I don't use PSPP very often, but do not use the auto save.

Yup, its one of the first things I switch off on a new install anyway. The issue is definitely something particular to X3 and definitely something that didn't happen in X2. Probably doesn't affect most folk if they're working with JPEG as it'd take alot more images opening and closing before available memory runs out.

What value(s) in the Task Manager are you watching?

In my WinVista the ram usage is 24% before starting Corel.

It increases during use as files are opened and then goes back to 24% after everything is closed up.

Maybe I am not testing correctly ... or maybe it is the way Win7 is set up?

I too have Windows 7 and I have seen the ram remain.

Marty are you closing PSP as well or just the files? Your description is a little confusing on that point. When I edit and save a file the RAM that PSP is using while it's running remains the same even after closing the file. But PSP must remain running for the problem to be visible. Closing PSP fixes the problem.

For example when I run PSP it uses up 61 MB of RAM all by itself.

I open up a PSPImage for a bookmark I'm working on and the RAM used jumps to 71 MB. If I close it without editing it then PSP releases only 2MB of the data from RAM (for me at least). If I edit and close, then the RAM seems to stay the same for me, holding steady at whatever level it was at with the image opened, in my case 71 MB. The same if I save the image before closing it. When I close PSP all of the RAM is returned.

On a side note, if i opened edited, and closed the exact same image multiple times I would get the error talked about in this post. Took a script to do it but it happened.

I would like to look at the same thing, watch the values change.

Maybe you could do a screenshot?

I'm looking at the processes tab, in the Memory slot of the table.
