iMovie 09 to VS x3

Post by cshudson »

Hi guys, newbie here,
In iMovie 09 when I'd add a transition, I was able to load up what they called a "precision editor" and was able to slide the transition to the left or right so as to cover more of clip 1 and less of clip 2 or vice versa. In VS x3, when I add a transition, It seems to be locked over the 2 clips. Is there a way to get the iMovie funtionality in VS x3?

Thanks.

No, but to adjust the transition you simply increase or decrease it's duration.

Which is not that good a solution. Here is a real world example. I have a clip where subject starts speaking immediatly so if I can't adjust the end time of the transition,or more accuratly, the ratio that transition is overlaying clips, subjects first word or 2 get muted. I could shorten the transition, but that's just going to make the transition look funny. Both clips are getting affected equally. It would be nice if Corel woul allow for this in a future update. Thanks for giving me the info though. It certainly saves me time trying to figure this app out.

Have you tried grabbing the yellow handle on one side of the transition in the timeline and dragging it? It appears that for example if you drag it to the left, it overlaps more of the previous clip..

Yes That works, sort of. The problem is, it is not overlaying less of clip 2, just more of clip 1. I was looking for a way to control exactly how much of each clip gets "eaten up" by the transition. Perhaps as a workaround, I could shorten the transition by a bunch , then drag to the left. That might just work.

Just tried and no go. When you drag to the left, It is making the transition bigger but still consuming equal parts of both clips. IOW, You drag the handle to the left and equal part of clip 1 and 2 are getting overlayed, you are just increasing the time of the transition, not specifing where it should go. Seems this funtionality is missing.

Try switching to Audio View and use the Rubber Band feature to adjust the fade in/out of the clips.

Or you could try to split the audio from the video. That puts a copy of the audio in the audio track. Now when transitions are added to your video clips the audio is not affected. This is, in effect, a J-Cut.

Well, I opened the Audio View and just turned off fade in for clip 2, at least now I can hear the beginning anyways. Thanks for pointing me in that direction, never would have thought of that. I hope that add the funtionality of moving transitions along the timeline independant of clip position in the future. Thanks for all the help!

You could also separate that section of the audio so that the audio is independant of the transition effects on the video. It's a little tricker to sync but it's another way round what you are trying to do

Yes, splitting the audio. I also gave him that tip.
