Sorry mods but I tried editing the last post and it seems to have gone!!.
Anyway more info.
I've download X3 Pro on a free trial to see what it can do before I buy. I've tried doing a few things.
Photo montage against a video track (default movie reel supplied in VS).
Tried a HD def video single video track about 50 seconds long using output from a Go Pro Hero HD
Tried a video in multiple formats using Main video and combinations of overlays (1 or 2) with video in corners or elsewhere.
Sometimes it works but more often than not it crashes out and creates a dump file.
Details of the files I'm playing with when it comes to video.
They are MP4 files directly out of the go pro - (i'll get additional shortly when i return home).
I am running x3 pro downloaded directly from Corel with a 'check updates patch' installed.
I have directx 11.
I'll supply more info shortly when I'm back in front of the machine.
regards and thanks in advance for any guidance.

Re: Video Studio X3 Pro - keeps crashing
MP4s can be very problematic. Try converting them to MPEG2 or AVI first (try SUPER) then insert them into VS.

Black Lab,
thanks for the quick response and I appreciate I haven't posted enough info to aid all you folks to do a really good response. Where do I stand (and forgive me for being really really new and thick) The MP4 files are straight out of camera in I believe HD format. Will I lose quality if I convert them to Mpeg2 or AVI and then try to render as a HD vid?
regards
A

Re: Video Studio X3 Pro - keeps crashing
Sometimes you do not have any choice.
You are right in assuming that every change of format can cause loss of quality and that is why where it is possible you should stick to the original format until you are ready to create (render) an edited video. When you do have to convert the video due to a problematic format then the best format to convert to would be your intended final format - for a Video DVD that would be MPEG2.
Otherwise you have format A (source) converted to Format B (editing) and then format C (Burning) which would be 3 changes.

Re: Video Studio X3 Pro - keeps crashing
thanks, i'll give that a try, but it doesn't explain why it is erroring when doing the photo montage to DVD format so I feel the underyling issue is more fundamental.

Re: Video Studio X3 Pro - keeps crashing
I googled the problem and came up with the answer, I joined this website just to answer the question so you (the OP) will have the answer too
in the google search I typed "corel studio keeps crashing" and thats how I found this website and thread. In saying that the second search result came up with a title "Corel User to User Web Board • View topic - Video Studio X3 Pro" and it solved my problem, the reason why it crashes is due to quicktime as it maybe too new, I have no idea why corel doesn't have updates to fix this (unprofessional if you ask me). When I first encountered this problem (years back) it wouldn't let me watch the edited clip i had, and like you I was forced to convert the files. The program seemed to hate MOV files.
However even though it ruined the quality I at least had a choice, but NOW i can't even convert, meaning my edited files I took ages to cut and paste meant nothing i.e I can't convert to a movie not even play the edited clips. If i convert the originals it would take me ages to recut.
In that second google search result I found out a thing called 'quick time alternative", I googled for "QuickTime_Alternative_311.exe" (I suppose you don't need this specific version but i got it as it was mentioned) and all I needed to do was uninstall my very new quicktime pro to this older version.
Now it converts and watches fine without crashing.
