Carver and Extractor Not Working

Post by kendp »

Just upgraded to PSP X3 and am trying to check out the Carver and Extractor features. But all I get is a black screen. I read what Help had to say and think I am following the correct procedure, but am posting here in the hoopes you can help me resolve the problem.

I am working in Full Edit on an image that is in the workspace. When I click on either carver or extractor, the correct page opens, but where there should be a photo, it is black and the OK button is not highlighted.

Reading another thread re the extractor, I am not optimistic; also I have another program that I think is probably much better, but I would still like to get both the carver and extractor working

Assistance with this will be appreciated.

Try updating the drivers for your video card.
If that does not cure it then update your DirectX

Thanks.

I used your link to update Direct X. I think I checked on driver and found it was up to date. I say "think" because I may have checked on wrong thing. To find what I thought was the driver I followed this path: Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Display Adapters. If that is not correct, please steer me in the right direction.

In any case, still have the black screen when I try to open carver and extractor.

Make sure that you have installed the patch for PSPP X3.
Do you see an image if you go to File > Color Management > Color Management and disable colour management? If that fixes things, the cause of the problem will be that you are using the wrong monitor colour profile or the profile is damaged.

Thanks, Tim, you put your finger on the problem, but I do not know what to do about it.

When I installed X3, the only images that I could put in the full edit workspace were those that had previously been worked on in some way by another program. For those that had not, instead of the image I got a black screen and colored lines. Also a color mismatch error notice. The solution for that problem was to uncheck use embedded profile in workspace and check ignore embedded profile. Now all images, whether straight from camera or after something being done to them by another program, open in the editing workspace.

Is it that change that now makes it impossible to see an image in the carver workspace unless color management is disabled?

The first thing I'd try is to replace the default monitor profile that is being used by PSP and Windows.
There are a few options. The best would be to use a profile created by a specialist program and profiling tool, but for most PSP users that would be overkill. The other options are to make sure that you're using the colour profile provided by the manufacturer of your monitor and that it is for your exact monitor model. Usually this would be installed when you install the monitor driver supplied by the manufacturer, or ideally the latest version downloaded from their web site. You can check the profile that is being used by going to Display Properties (right click a blank area of the Windows desktop and select "Properties"), then clicking the Settings tab > Advanced button. Both the "Monitor" tab and the "Color Management" tab should show your exact model of monitor and not just some generic name.
The other option is to go to File > Color Management > Monitor Calibration and work through the process there. This will result in PSP creating a monitor profile and setting it as the new Windows default, but I'd suggest installing the manufacturers driver first.
In File > Color Management > Color Working Space use "sRGB Color Space Profile" as the default, or "AdobeRGB1998" if your camera is set to use that. If your images come from a raw converter you may have to use the profile that is embedded by it - Lightroom uses "ProPhoto" for instance - or change the default color working space in the raw converter. A bug in PSP causes monitor profiles to be displayed as options for the color working space... definitely don't use a monitor profile there.
