VS Pro X3 crashing

Hi everyone. I appreciate any assistance you can provide.

VS Pro X3 is crashing at various times, especially during preview of the project (not clips), and during render of the project to either video or audio file.

My source files are mostly .MOV files generated by my Kodak PlaySport HD camera (720p 60fps and 1080p 30fps). I have a few small wav files, a few mp3 clips, and a short mp4 video clip.

I have tried outputting to nearly every format. So far, the best results (still crashes but does better) have been when using 720x480@30fps MPG file. It crashed at 66% complete.
If I try to render to a 720 or 1080 resolution file, it crashes at slightly past 1% complete.
For testing purposes, I have found that I can get it to crash by simply creating a wav file.

Just to let you know some of the things I have already tried:
Uninstalled codec pack
Installed latest DX redistributable
Patched VS to current level via in-program updater
Tried removing scene transitions
Tried removing video files where the render failed

At one point I thought I had figured it out. By muting the sound I was able to get further in the render, but it still crashed.

Hi MithriMike,
Just looking over what you have written a few things stand out as possible sources of trouble.
1. Mixing assets on the time. You say you have .mov files from Kodak (not a great start because they are very proprietary) mixed with MP4s. Because VS is working with multiple codecs there and probably widely differing file parameters you are asking it to do some pretty nimble switching and changing. The possible solution is to convert all files to an agreed upon standard for the project then bring them together on the timeline. Bear in mind loss of quality when converting highly compressed files.
2. Mixing assets on the audio line. You have wavs which are bog standard and rarely cause problems as well as MP3. The problem may be the MP3s. Because they are a highly compressed format and contain their own internal time-stamp they can cause problems in the render when the program is trying to reconcile video clip times and MP3 times. VS has also had difficulty over the years with a particular brand of MP3 (there are many different flavours of MP3) but the name escapes me right now.

As your first step I would first extract any MP3 from the project and convert to wav files then pull it back into the project. If the MP3 is part of a video clip dont forget to mute the clip! See how that goes. If not then I would start looking at converting the MP4 videos to the same prameters as the .movs.

My own recommendation would have been the exact opposite: to convert the .mov files to mp4 or at least some other format which VS has less trouble with. Successive versions of VS do not appear to like .mov video very much...

And the mp3 format which it has particular difficulty with appears to be the LAME codec...

If you intend to create a Video DVD with these files I would convert them to MPEG2.
At some point they will end up in that format anyway - those VOB files on a DVD disc are MPEG2 format, so to avoid changing from one format to another and then to yet another it is better to convert it to the proper format now.

I want to thank you all for your assistance and your good suggestions. Converting the QT files to Mpeg allowed me to get further into the project, but even then I started to get 'out of memory' errors. I've found another product that handles the QT files without needing re-encoding, doesn't crash on my pc, and doesn't give memory errors when rendering the project, so I'm going to use that product instead. Thank you Corel for letting me use the 30 day trial, as I would be quite upset if I had to deal with attempting to get a refund.

I too am having numerous issues rendering and even previewing projects I create using VSPX3. I have opened a ticket with Corel support for the issue, and included numerous system snaps and VPS dump files for their perusal although this has yet to be resolved. Their initial response after some back and forth was that something in my environment had become corrupt. I gave them the benefit of the doubt - I was editing off an older laptop that had it's own set of issues, and coincidentally had just purchased a new laptop primarily for my wife but we decided to port all video editing stuff there - it would remove any environmental concerns based off where I was currently working.

It's not like we do it a lot, but with our first child on the way and me living in a seperate continent from my family we decided that sending DVDs of the babys progress would be a way to make m family feel a part of things... So 20 minute videos periodically of aspects of life that they don't get to see.

However the problem has persisted on the new system.

I stumbled upon this thread, and find it interesting to read that someone else has had the same problem, and it actually all starts to make sense.

I'm using a Canon CoolPIx L110 to capture the video files. These are encoded in .mov (I always assumed some variant of H.264) and one of the main reasons for picking up VSPX3 in the first place was it allowed me to work with these files extensively in the environment without going through an intermediate conversion.

For the record I'm not opposed against doing any such conversion, and I initially tried to use Windows Movie Player (on XP) which didn't have support for .mov and so I tried numerous tools to attempt to convert the 720p .MOV files to something else. Anything else. The quality loss however was appaling and so I decided that rather than risk quality loss I'd work with a product that supported .mov and my trial experiences of VSPX3 were without problems. I registered for the full product and absolutely love the environment to work in. For my cheesy home movies I can do everything I need and so much more with ease.

So, whilst I wait for Corel Support to work with me on this existing project I would definitely appreciate some suggestions here on working with these .MOV files to try something with a different format.

1) For 720p .MOV files what would you guys suggest I convert the video to first bearing in mind I want to avoid as little quality loss as possible* ?
2) And which tool would you advocate for doing this?

*I know that I'm going to lose quality when I go from 720p raw footage to a DVD quality DV file, however my goal is to minimise quality loss at every stage until I render in the target format. Whilst I am currently working with 720p destined for a DVD I want to plan to move to full HD, recording from a 1080p camcorder and burning on Blu-Ray. I guess since I'm fairly new to video editing I want to find and stick to a process that will scale with me.

I know I haven't included a ton of system specs with this - I'm content to work through the issues surrounding the system crashes with Corel Support, but would love to get some feeling on the above 2 questions from the community in parallel for something to try...

Ok, scratch that - I've just seen the recommendation of Super - not sure how I missed that. Giving it a shot and seeing if it resolves things for me.

Update; With that said I believe I am still seeing quality loss with the additional step of using super to convert the video file. A 90 MB .mov file gets converted to a 12 MB .mpg file. How do other folks handle this ? Am I missing something obvious ?

I wanted to create a DV 16:9 AVI of a sourced .mov and a converted .mpg for coparison but was unable to get the .mov to render.

The settings on Super I used were:
Output Container: MPG
Output Codec : MPEG-II
Output Audio Codec: mp2

Video Settings:
Scale: No change
Aspect: blank
Frame/Sec : 30
Bitrate 1152
Options: Hi Quality, 48K Audio

Am I missing something obvious ? Is there a better alternative for converting and maintaining video quality. Incidentally I was able to fully render off the MPG but like I said, the quality was lacking, so this does seem to suggest that something is upset with the .movs in VSPX3.

Just out of interest, there are many types of Mov files, what type of compression are your files using?
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Notice the bit rate of 8000kbps, will allow for 60 minutes of video to a single layer DVD 4.3 Gb
Your rate of 1152 is exceptionally low for a DVD.

Thanks guys, I changed the bitrate setting to 8000 (I don't think we'll be clocking in more than an hours footage per DVD) and am batch converting all my .mov files as we speak. I ran a test file through and there seems to be very little notable quality loss (unlike when the setting was down in the 1000s)...

Now to re-do the presentation using the MPEG-2 files and see if I can get the render to complete without errors. I'll feedback results here as it could be a day or 2 before I have the time to completely rebuild the project.
