PSP X3 Win7 Screen Capture activate keys don't always work

Post by mck »

Using PSP X3 to do screen capture using activation keys (hot keys like F12 to activate the capture).

Capture works in most applications but not in several java applications, etc. Timed capture works so it seems problem is with the key activation or right mouse click, neither of which works.

I have older PSP 7.04 too which oddly works for those java applications, but not any of the others - so just the opposite of the new PSP.

I'd appreciate any insights, or advice on a screen capture program to grab multiple images and write to files.

Thanks.

Win 7 use snip tool and paste in to PSP. I have Clip Cache which saves all Clipboard captures In a File Its not free but Its not expensive But You may find some free Clipboard Extenders

thanks for the suggestion. I capture hundreds of images, sometimes in rapid succession, so I need a 1-key stroke solution. PSP does this, but just doesn't work consistently across all applications. Also, instead of snip tool, you can just hit CTRL-ALT-PRTSCRN and then "paste" into PSP. On the XP platform, PSP captured screens from any application with a keystroke, but in WIN-7 it apparently cannot.

Another thing, in PSP, I had to save each of those hundreds of images at end of day. I'd love a feature that just automatically saved them to disk.

does yours have a name? And does it save the screen captures to files in the background? I just tried "snag it" http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagittrialthx.asp

it does it pretty well but I'm with you, there is probably freeware out there that will do it, just need to find it! Again, key for me is hitting single key and having the image saved automatically to a directory with a unique file name. That lets me keep working.

This is what I'm Using http://www.xrayz.co.uk/clipcache/
It is Handy If you need to grab a lot of images you can then open it and Paste them all into PSP. If you do any copy or copy merge then paste in psp you will find the images have been saved in its data base too Hence the need to clean it out. Though I keep a lot of URL's for the Corel Knowledge base to pass on Etc

Thanks for that! So it says "Save captured clips to individual files." - can you set it up to do screen captures with a keystroke to a folder - one after another? Like in PSP, it numbers the images it captures, in Snag-it, same thing only Snag-it writes them to files while PSP keeps them in memory until you save each (pain).

Hi,

Ok, appreciate the feedback. I've come to "really" like Snag-it from Techsmith.com - it writes to a file, has no problems capturing any kind of screen from any application - basically I get whatever is on the screen.

Unfortunately, the Corel tech people came back and said I just needed to change hotkeys - but that's not true. I tried almost every hotkey available and it still would not capture some of the java applications I'm running. That is, when one of those applications is the active window, no capture happens. Snag-it on the other hand had no problems. Oddly enough, the Corel product will capture some of the java window but "only" if the active window is a non-java application. It will also capture under timed capture so It can do it but seems to have a bug.

In any case, not purely win-7 compatible I guess, and the support people don't seem to ... not sure.

I'm guessing there maybe freeware that does capture-to-file like snagit but so far I haven't come across one yet. For the price, it's worth it to me I suppose, and it's 1/3 the Corel product.

I'm working on my own to mimic the PSP options. Right now it saves to a file. You can tell it to save multiple files, and put it on a delay. But it stinks so that's of no use to you. But you're looking for a free option that can save screen captures and can capture individual applications not just the whole screen huh? I'll do some searching and let you know what I come up with. Otherwise, yeah Snag-it is a well made program.

Just found one that's free:
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

It "appears" to do what I need, setup a hotkey to capture the whole screen to a file in the background (saves with file # appended). So, I just hit the hotkey whenever I want screen capture and end up with a .png file named MWsnap-0001.png, then 0002, etc. Basically does what snag-it does only it's free.

Only issue I find is that it can't use any of the function keys as hotkeys, and has no option to use just the PrtScrn key as snag-it does. All this means is that I have to configure the hotkey with two keys like [ctrl]+D, or some combination. A minor inconvenience. I'll keep looking for others. Thanks!

You might look into Greenshot. It's an opensource project that is labeled as a good replacement for snagit. I've never gotten aquainted so as to that claim I can't say. Of course it's open source so any and all edits, if you know how, can be made.

You have to make sure to set-up the things you want as the defaults don't match your requirements. For example it opens up an image editor after every capture for further editing. You can turn that off and it will simply save to a file.

Greenshot won't allow you to set-up your own hot-keys as far as I can tell. But they all revolve around the Print Screen button. For example Ctrl+Print is fullScreen and alt+Print is Capture Window and just plain old Print is capture to capture a region. With the region one you set a region with your left mouse button after hitting the Print Screen button. This will then capture the region you set. You can recapture that region at anytime using Shift+Print.

It can save to a number of formats(png, jpeg, gif, bmp) , will save to any directory you want and has advanced naming function for the files so you can attach the date using special characters.

Do you have a mouse with extra buttons that you can assign that Key action to.
I have Undo set on my mouse so if i do somthing that looks bad one press and I can try again

Levifiction - that's GREAT info, thanks a bunch, very helpful. I'll go try it out.

No progress with Corel, they told me to try other hotkeys but I've tried all they offer and none solve the issue. Clearly if other packages can do it, even freeware, then they've got something off in their code. I found at least one other package (a video recorder) with the same capture problem over my java application screens so maybe whatever technique or keys don't work is not an uncommon issue.

thanks again!
