Best video format

Post by PUME2004 »

Looking for those with experience to recommend the best video format to work with when using VSPX3.
Also, what is the lowest recommended bitrate for HD video on BluRay?

My camera records in 1080p and saves to .mov (45 Mb/s). It will import and playback fine, but as soon as I add effects/transitions it will crash if I try to play through the project. I have tried using SUPER to convert to AVC but that results in files with audio only and no video. I have converted to MP4, but these won't even import without crashing the program. I am converting to lower bitrates (5000 kb/s) prior to importing. My goal is to be able to create a bluray disc with multiple HD video clips with simple fades and some picture in picture effects, but I haven't even been able to get close. I think I've got enough horsepower to do this, but it just isn't working.

Hi,

I also use camera (VholdR) that records 1080p mov-files and also experienced crashes with Videostudio. I discovered that a new version of Quicktime (7.6.6) was the issue. When I installed an earlier version (7.6.0) the crashes during rendering where over. Maybe you have the same problem.

It isn't a perfect solution though, because Itunes requires at least Quicktime 7.6.4. I already notified Corel with al the information, but I didn't receive any reply yet. It would be nice if they could confirm this and even better, work on a real solution.

I hope this information helps you.

In the thread referenced by Black Lab above, it is suggested files be converted to .AVI using cineform NeoScene. This seemed to work, crashing stopped, but I am not thrilled about buying a $100 dollar app to make VSPX3 work correctly. I was experimenting with handbrake and converting to MP4/MPEG-4 which seemed to work just as well. Both programs convert the files quickly, but handbrake is free. :D VSPX3 has a conversion utility but it doesn't seem to want to let me keep my HD resolution. I think there is a thread somewhere on this board that provides a workaround for that, but I'm not sure I'm adventurous enough to mess around with registry values. I haven't tried downgrading to QT 7.6.0. If that is truly the problem, maybe Corel will come out with a patch that will make converting the video unnecessary. In the meantime, I think I have an acceptable workaround. Thanks for the help; I finally made it through the process of putting a test project together and rendering it successfully.

It's not so much about making X3 work correctly, but more like making a troublesome format (for VS as well as other apps) easier to work with.
