Videostudio 11, AVI and timeline issues

Post by packertundra »

I have Windows 7 64 bit on an HP a-6500f computer with 8 gb RAM and a 1TB hd. I have been having issues with VS 11 and editing. I am using video taken from a Kodak ZX1 pocket HD video camera. It records in .MOV but after having continuous issues with VS crashing during editing I looked on the forums to find that VS does not handle .mov files very well. I have converted the files to .avi and now have issues when trying to expand the timeline. It seems to try and reload each AVI clip when trying to expand the timeline.
How can I get this software to run smoothly? Should I be using a different file format? Do I need to configure preferences differently? I am a newbie to video editing but am very computer savvy and this does not seem to be very intuitive at all to make it work. Any help would be appreciated.

AVI is a wrapper and can contain over 800 different file types. I suspect the sort you have converted to is not fully compatible with VS, the same as MOV isn't.
What sort of avi file did you create?
Can the supplied software convert to anything that VS may handle?

Hi

There are many different types of Mov files as well as Avi, so a little more info is required.

Right click one of the Mov files and select Properties…What are they?

Also

Video Studio likes standard DV-Avi and should have no problem with this format.
So what compression did you use for your Avi conversion?
What are the Avi properties.?

Video Studio
Smart Proxy allows the program to cope a little easier with HD video.
Make sure Smart Proxy is enabled and that the proxy files have been created.

Quick Time
There have been some problems when using the latest versions.
If QT came with VS 11, re-install that version.
A search on the forum may find further info.

Yes indeed there are, as MOV is the apple equivalent of AVI, but I'm not sure how many flavours you can get in Apples :)
