VS 9 bug list continued

Post by Blue Canary »

Bugs observed with VS 9 upgrade from VS 6 (XP Home SP2, P4 2.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 120GB 7200 rpm UDMA5 system hard drive, 160GB 7200 rpm UDMA5 video hard drive - 68GB of which is unfragmented free space):

1. AutoRun.exe refuses to install Smartsound Quicktracks Full Spectrum 22k onto the hard drive (my original complaint) -2000 error box issued with each of the Full Spectrum track names (this bug is not replicated on low-spec laptop with Windows ME). Just copying the SmartSound files from laptop to desktop results in tracks showing up in VS9 but without variations and without fit to specified duration functionality. Only workaround discovered to date is to burn the Smartsound files to a CD and point Quicktracks to the CD.

2. Save As dialog box: When you start to fill in a file name, if the directory you have selected contains an mpg file with the same first few letters as the name you are using for this new project file, AutoComplete fills in the box with that name (even though it is not a VSP file but an MPG file) and then VS9 hangs and only End Task will get out of it. I have replicated this bug with 100% consistency so far.

3. Capturing as DVD (PAL) MPEG from Firewire Camcorder: Regardless of the position of the Speed versus Quality slider in the capture options, this function causes Memory used by VS9 to grow and grow as the DV transcode buffer fills up. Eventually (probably when the RAM and pagefile are full) the capturing stops automatically, the transcode buffer is emptied and the rest of the capture is abandoned prematurely without warning. The transcode buffer filling up for even a low quality, high speed capture is similar behaviour to that experienced in VS6 before "UVS6Patch2Eng.exe" was released.

4. Capturing as DV (PAL) from Firewire Camcorder: Capture file is split into maximum of 4GB files as if it is carrying out the "Seamless Capture" function - but I am using NTFS File Systems with Windows XP Home so there is no maximum file size limitation. Surely Seamless Capture of 4GB chunks should only apply to FAT/FAT32 volumes - as the manual implies.

5. Sometimes when pressing F6 to bring up Preferences, VS9 has just completely disappeared.

6. No sound when playing Instant preview of DV (PAL) projects even though the sound is fine when playing back the individual clips.

Grateful for any help with these bugs. I have already tried all sorts of permutations of installing/uninstalling VS6, VS9 upgrade, Windows installer 3.1 v.1 & v.2. I did not have any of these problems with the trial version downloaded from Ulead website. I just wish Ulead had enabled full activation from the trial version simply by way of a registration code.

Hi, Blue Canary,

I "upgraded" from VS7 to VS9 skipping VS8. I had the same problem with the AutoRun (your #1 on the list) feature on all of the "Smart Download" files. I had to install all of them myself.

I have not had the autofill problem you did in #2, although it does fill in the name, I'm able to change it without a lock up.

On #3, I am using NTSC format and it stops when the transcode buffer fills up and it empties, but continues. It hasn't locked up for me yet (knocks on wood).

I haven't tried #4 or #5, but I did just try #5 and it worked okay, but again, that is the only time I've ever done it.

#6, Again, I'm using NTSC format, but I have one clip that I captured via my analog set up and from the beginning of the tape to maybe three minutes into it, I can hear the sound if I'm playing the clip, but when I switch to Project mode, there are just pops and bangs, no audio. I cut out that first three minutes and everything else worked great. Really sad since the first three minutes is a wonderful song that I want to use. I even cut that part of the clip out and tried to separate the audio from it and create an audio file and it didn't work, either.

Good luck!
Mathis...

I have experienced this bug in VS9, VS8 and VS7. However, they only hang if the files, whether mpeg or avi, the names of which start with the same letters as the name you want to give to your project or rendered file are relatively large. One way of avoiding the lock-up is by making sure the first character you type in is the dot preceding the extension. If you then complete your file or project name VS won't try to fill it in for you.

Hi Blue Canary

1. I have installed VS 9 to Win 2k and have had no problems with smartsound.
I was using VS 8 which I uninstalled, and removed all VS content including smartsound folders prior to installation.
The installation of the smartsound / quicktracks suffers a considerable delay before continuing to install.
This may give the impression that the install has frozen or finished???????? If this is the case be patient.

2 / YES I have to agree with you there, the problem may be that we are trying to save a project as *.mpg which you cannot do.
Although the dropdown box only gives me the options, I do not have to choose, I type in my own name.
Only when I click the *.mpg option does it freeze.

3 / Captured one hour + to Pal-Dvd template experienced the transcode buffer at about 40 mins.
Capture automatically restarted after flushing.

4 / Using NTFS File Systems continued capture to over one hour, file size 4.54 Gb.
One complete file no 4 Gb limit.

5 / Not experienced this as yet, but I have noticed it disappear I think during setting the burner module???? , but it does come back after 2 seconds (a bit worrying) does VS 9 return or do you have to reload.

6 / As for project playback, I am not too happy about the quality, I think VS 8 was much smoother, maybe its my system but I do get sound.

Do you think VS 10 will be any better?

1. Trevor, it’s not a question of patience for #1. Yes there is a long delay whilst it is installing Quicktracks but I do not touch anything until an error box is produced for each of the Full Spectrum track names in turn with only the option to say skip this track by pressing OK. The error code is -2000. The same error codes are obtained by trying to manually install from Full Spectrum 22k.exe on the program disc (after seemingly successfully installing Quicktracks.exe from the disc). I didn't have a problem installing and using Quicktracks on the trial version.

2. Thanks for the advice alosada - typing the dot first is a helpful workaround for #2. Trevor, you don't seem to be unfortunate enough to be experiencing the same problem here. The point is that I don't get the option not to choose the .mpg as it has already AutoCompleted with the only other file in the folder with the same first few letters, which happens to be an .mpg. I have only typed a few letters when the program hangs. I haven't in anyway accepted the AutoComplete - the mouse pointer is miles away from the dialog box and my little finger has not touched the Enter key.

3. Perhaps it is a problem specific to using the Firewire camcorder as an Analog to Digital converter/bridge ("AV to DV" mode on the camcorder) - that is, an analogue source as input for camcorder (via S-video and Left/Right analogue audio connections) with the tape removed. But again I did not have this problem with the trial version of UVS9 from which I captured many half hour video files in this way.

4. It seems as if when you have selected "Split by scene" even if there isn't a scene change, it splits the file every 4GB. This is not unreasonable as I didn't need "Split by scene" selected - but this policy does not appear to be mentioned in the manual.

5. No, when VS9 disappears it does not return - I have to restart the application.

6. Again, I did not have a sound problem with the trial version when using Instant preview - same system.

Let's hope Ulead take note of these problems and release a set of patches soon. I remember VS6 was pretty buggy when it was first released but at least the major issues around capturing and encoding were dealt with in patches released about 8 months later !!

Hi Blue Canary

2 / Saving a VSP, I do not think we should be getting the *.mpg option at all.
Yours freezes immediately, whilst mine needs me to select the option .mpg.

3 / I captured from digital camcorder via Firewire selecting Pal-Dvd as capture settings.

I have noticed another annoying problem related to the capture screen.

I normally set my project properties first then from capture ‘Options’ select ‘Project Template Value’
This would normally set my capture settings to match, VS 9 is not recognizing my project settings.

Just tried it for the third time and the B***** thing has crashed.

I don’t believe this, now I have no audio.

Just tried to save a PAL DV project as a PAL DV video file and it stopped rendering at 34% with "Unspecified Error [17113:4:1]". I have not even got to the final stage of any project yet since uninstalling the trial version - thwarted at every turn. For users of earlier versions of Videostudio, I would hold off upgrading until Ulead responds to these issues.

Re: #2, the system WILL come back, though it may take some time. I've run into this as well and have been using the same trick of starting with the filename extension, and then filling in the actual name.

The filename matching is done by Windows and the Common Dialog APIs, so there's no simple way to prevent partial filename matching. The real problem is that UVS will then try to obtain the file properties and/or generate a Preview, which can take considerably time.

From my experience this is caused by faulty video file. I found making a DVD with clips is aggrivating when one clip is defective. My solution is to join all the clips together first then use the new file to make a DVD. If they do not join then join a few at a time to detect the one that is defective. I assumed it was because my notebook is 3 years old and lacking processing power that causes the faulty clips.

One other thing, does anyone have problems making VS9 not converting compliant video files. I use my DVD recorder to create video from my old VCR tapes in 2hr format then import this with VS9. Everything works great but when making a DVD it keeps trying to convert the video. After a few preference changes to and from it eventually works.

Another serious bug. VS9 is silently deinterlacing when it shouldn't be. Despite using Lower Field First settings throughout, starting from PAL DV files, saving as PAL DVD files I have just noticed that whilst the resulting .mpg file is tagged as Lower Field First, both fields are identical. Of course this results in jerkier motion on an interlaced TV as well as having the vertical resolution halved.

(Resulting .mpg file was analysed in PowerDVD 5 with deinterlacing set to "weave" and frames with lots of horizontal motion were compared to .mpg files of the same material rendered in VS6.)

Post by Blue Canary »

The "silent deinterlacing when it shouldn't be" bug seems to be specific to the "Batch Convert" function. PAL DVD .mpg files saved singly appear to be fine.

Any other experiences with Batch Convert? I thought it would be a great time-saving function - set it up with a list of .VSPs to convert and go to bed !! But it's completely useless if the resulting files are erroneously and silently deinterlaced.

Some solutions / workarounds

Post by Blue Canary »

OK. I think I have found enough workarounds to get on and use VS9 now. I thought I would summarise how I am dealing with these problems on the off-chance that it may help someone else.

1. No improved solution to the -2000 error when installing Full Spectrum 22k (media for Quicktracks) - I can only use the Full Spectrum 22k with full functionality by coping the .sds files installed by my laptop's VS9

onto a CD-R and pointing Quicktracks (within VS9) to the CD-ROM drive.

2. Type .vsp into the Project Save As dialog box before typing the filename. Another option, which I now favour, is to save project files to a folder which I have designated for project files only.

3. MPEG Capture transcode buffer filling up and capture then being abandoned apparently occurs if and only if Windows Task Manager is running. (Is this Heisenberg's principle? !!)

4. When using camcorder as analog to digital converter and capturing DV from the camcorder output, uncheck Split by Scene.

5. This hasn't happened recently - touch wood.

6. I resolved the lack of sound when using Instant Playback by making sure that, under the General tab of Preferences, "Instant Playback target" says only "Preview Window".

7. For completeness, as stated in my most recent post, the erroneous deinterlacing problem apparently occurs if and only if I am using the "Batch Convert" function. I would advise avoiding Batch Convert until

Ulead fixes it.

Oh, and Vercada - the only time I have had VS9's Create Disc try to convert MPEG files despite the appropriate "Do not convert" checkbox being ticked is when I forgot to clear the timeline as advised in the

"Announcement" at the top of this VideoStudio forum. I don't know whether this was the case for you.

Thanks for that, yes I didn't clear the timeline but once done it works fine now.

A refinement on bug #7

Post by Blue Canary »

A refinement on bug #7 in the list higher up in this topic:

The erroneous deinterlacing occurs if and only if

"Batch Convert" function is used to convert from DV '.avi's to DVD '.mpg's
AND
[EITHER the source is .vsp (project file of the '.avi's)
OR
"Video Save Options" in the Batch Convert dialog has "Two-pass encode" selected under its "Compression" tab (obviously only a concern when "variable data rate" is selected).]

I am surprised no-one else has discussed using Batch Convert on this forum previously. As the pioneer user of this part of the software, this bug has certainly caused me some stress. I hope others will now be able to enjoy the convenience of the Batch Convert tool without enduring the headaches !!

VS9 crashes on 2-pass encode?

Post by preston »

I've been getting (win xp sp2) crashes when I check "two pass"encode in making a DVD. I am following the recommended procedures (nothing in time-line, etc.) Unchecking the box seems to have eliminated the crashes.

I'm not sure this is the problem, though, because I had a few crashes when editing AVIs. This problem is referenced elsewhere.
