X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Hi everyone,
I'm finding that certain video files cause VideoStudio X3 to consistantly crash. The crash causes a DMP file to be created.
The videos play fine in every video player I've tried but VideoStudio X3 just won't load them.
So here's the question. On creation of the DMP file it tells me to contact Corel Technical Support. But it seems that the only way I can do that is to Telephone them in the US (and I'm in Australia). Is there any way to email them ?
I'm just so unhappy with this produvt at the moment. Crashing without any hint as to why.
Regards,
Tony

Let us know all that you can about the file concerned.
There is a guide Here regarding what information we require.

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Thanks Steve,
I'm using VideoStudio Pro X3 (13.6.0.272)
Using 'Info' from the 'Open Video File' dialog box and selecting the Video file I get this information
File Format: Microsoft AVI -- OpenDML
Size : 413,014 KB
Frame rate : 25.000 frames/sec
Duration : 3521.280 seconds
Data rate : 116:38 kbps
Video
Compression: DivX Video Decoder 0004
Attributes: 24 bits 384 x 288
Total frame: 88,032 frames
Audio
Compression: IMA ADPCM
Attributes : 44,100 kHz, 4 bit, Stereo
Total samples : 155,276,073 samples
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source: Off Internet share site, TV Show download
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Project Properties
Project Template: MPEG files
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower field first
(DVD-PAL) 4:3
Video rate: Variable [Max 8000 kbps]
LPCM audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
When I click the 'Open' button the Progress bar gets to about 95% and then stops. Moments later I get an Error telling me to Contact Corel Technical Support and details of a DMP file. I click OK and then a few minutes later VSX3 crashes to a Send Error Report to Microsoft prompt.
I'm probably doing something stupid but I'd hoped that the Error Reporting would alert me to it, not just Crash
Regards,
Tony

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
First off, you have downloaded a DivX file, and although it uses the .avi extension, it is in fact an mpeg-4 type video. But the real problem is that for whatever reason, VS X3 does not appear to support DivX. Previous versions did, and in fact an old version of the DivX codec was installed as part of those earlier versions of VS (I think it was DivX version 5.2.1 or something close to that). However, as I say, that no longer appears with VS. And I for one have not been able to get more recent versions of DivX to work with X3.
On the other hand, if you do a Google search for the freeware equivalent of DivX, namely XVid, and download and install that, you may have better luck. I know it works on my X3. Let us know...

You could also try first converting the file to something that VS likes.

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Thanks gents,
The plot thickens. I checked Info on another Video file (another Chapter of the same TV Show) and found that it is DivX BUT has MPEG Layer-3 Audio. This loads just fine into VSX3.
I also found that the file that causes the Crash will play on my Media Player but only the Video, no Audio !
So it seems like it's something to do with DivX Video and IMA ADPCM Audio
So I'll need to find some way to re-encode the File with MPEG Layer-3 audio before I can get it into VSX3

Tony

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Hi Tony,
I had the same frustrations. Also ready to ditch this program!! Certain large video files were crashing the program when attempting to import into the library.
I uninstalled FFDshow and also an FLV media player (which I think had nothing to do with the problem).
Anyhow, after a reboot, I was able to import those same video files which were causing the crashes. Seems there was some conflict between the 2 (FFDshow & VDX3) and I think the problem lies somewhere in VSX3 as I have had no other video problems on my system whatsoever.
Hope of some help,
Mick NSW

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Hi Tony
I seem to be having the same frustrations!
Have been trying to put together my 90minute video of a recent overseas holiday for nearly 3 months. Started with VS X2, upgraded to X3, upgraded my OS from WinXP to Win7, broken down my project into smaller segments, but cannot get the project to completion.
Contacted Tech Support who said I had missing/corrupted dll's which they said would be affecting the running of other programs on my PC (I have NO problems with any other software) and suggested reformatting my PC (which I refused as it had been upgraded only a week earlier) Sent in copies of .dmp files and system dump files for analysis. Was advised to try and find a solution on the Forum - I pointed out the error message received required submission of the .dmp files to Tech Support and that surely it was them that should be able to advise.
Then Tech Support suggested I install all the required codecs, and found the DivX was missing. After installing this all seemed great, until yesterday when the system started crashing again. Managed to get a few smaller segments of my project processed, and then system started crashing again - occasionally producing a .dmp file. Seemed to be after attaching an audio track.
I am ready to start putting together my next project, but am reluctant to continue with VS - great software to produce the movie, but all but impossible to get out to an mpg file or to DVD.
Unless I can find a solution very soon, I will be switching to a competitor software product, which I am trialling with success.
regards

PS - I notice all posts on this thread are from Aus - is this co-incidental?

What kind of audio?jonp wrote:Then Tech Support suggested I install all the required codecs, and found the DivX was missing. After installing this all seemed great, until yesterday when the system started crashing again...Seemed to be after attaching an audio track.
Obviously the audio seems to be the common denominator. Have either of you tried converting your clips to something else that VS might like better? SUPER is a good converter.bjuber wrote:I also found that the file that causes the Crash will play on my Media Player but only the Video, no Audio !

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
I'm using .m4a audio files dragged in from my Itunes library. Have today received a DivX update which I have installed, hoping this would solve my problem. Was able to play the video through in Edit mode with no problem. However when trying to create a DVD file, it crashes after creating yet another .dmp file.
Is there possibly any way I can read one of these .dmp files to see what is wrong?

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
Personally, I've never had any problems with files from iTunes. However, mine are MP3 files. (VS sometimes has trouble with MP3s made withe the LAME codec. iTunes does not use that codec.) You could try converting your m4a files to MP3 (using iTunes to do the conversion) or to WAV files, which are a rock-solid standard and should not give you any problems.

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
How do I save as an mp3 or wav file? Looks like for this feature I need an extended "purchased" copy of Itunes? I am reluctant to spend more on the off-chance this may fix my VS problem!

Re: X3 Crash when Inserting Video
To convert to MP3 simply right click on the song in iTunes and choose Create MP3 Version. To convert to wav I use the free Audacity.
