MPEG files from TiVo Problem?

Post by aprest »

After I use VideoReDo to convert *.tivo files to *.mpg files I can't open them in DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus (version 6.10.0194.6) to make a Blu-ray DVD. When I attempt to "Add Video File" by clicking any *.mpg files made from any *.tivo files the program locks up. I don't have this problem with MovieFactory from other *.mpg files that I have on my PC that were not created from *.tivo files. I also don't have this problem when I use Nero Vision 5 when opening *.mpg files made from *.tivo files. However I have trouble making reliable multiple chapter Blu-ray DVDs using Nero Vision.

Any suggestions as to how to get around this problem or another way to make multiple chapter Blu-ray DVDs from *.tivo files? I have TiVoed four chapters of The Pacific and I am trying to make a Blu-ray DVD from these first four chapters.

Does Video ReDo tell you exactly what properties your .mpg files have? I am kind of assuming that, coming from a TiVo, they are likely to be high definition HDV format mpeg-2, but in transport stream format. If they are, then try changing the extension to .m2t and see if MF will accept those...

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately changing the extension from mpg to m2t did not help. I am beginning to think that the 4 to 5 GByte files for each of the Pacific episodes are too big for MF to handle. I redid one of the Pacific episodes as a partial ~5 minute clip using VideoReDo with a file size of about 500MB and MF opened it with no problem. I also used VideoRedo on another TiVoed short movie which resulted in a file size of about 900MB and MF opened it as well.

This may be the case with HD video files, however I just took a 6GB DV (SD) video file, and was able to insert it without problem into MF. I don't think that just the size of the file is what the problem is. If it was, then MF should have rejected my DV file.

I think that you are right about it being something to do with HD files but the size of the HD file does seem to make a difference. So far I have not found a way to make a Blu-ray disk from multiple *.tivo files. I can easily make a Blu-ray file from a single *.tivo file using VideoReDo followed by tsMuxeR and then ImgBurn. The results are fantastic!

I also have not found a way to join two HD *.mpg files so that I could use tsMuxer to make the Blu-ray folders with chapters.
