Instant Project - HD-Project Crashes

Post by ryu292 »

I just purchased the VideoStudio Pro X3 product a couple of weeks back but have not been able to complete my objective with it since I've purchased it. I began with attempting to test out the Instant Project capabilities by selecting HD-Project however as soon as I select that option and attempt to insert 1 of the 2 available HD-Projects the program crashes.

I've submitted questions to Corel's custhelp.com site but other than a recommendation to uninstall (using Revo Uninstaller)/reinstall the product have yet to have my question resolved. Any help would be appreciated as I would hate to have to return this product since it seemed to have so much promise over the Sony Vegas Platinum product which I already have.

I'm not sure how to attach my .dmp file(s) which I've saved and also submitted to Corel support so if you require this file I can PM you it if necessary.

Welcome to the forums,

You stated that you're trying to insert 1 of 2 HD projects, using the Instant Project wizard. However I think that you start with the Instant Project wizard, which provides a template complete with example clips, then in the editor replace those example clips with your own. Is this where you are having the problems?

What format(s) are your HD projects? Are you trying to insert projects as in VSP files or video clips? A project (VSP) is not a video clip, even though it can be inserted and treated like a video clip. If so, instead of trying to insert VSP files, try inserting the video clips.

Do not attach your dump file (dmp) here, it is meant for the programmers at Corel. We would not be able to do anything with it, and probably would not understand what it would be telling us..;)

I'm not even able to insert the HD-project, I'm starting with a blank project and haven't even begun to import in my AVCHD files. I can't insert the HD-Project as it freezes then gives me the error message pointing to the specific dmp file. I can insert HD-Simple into the timeline (again I haven't even imported any of my clips yet). I'm aware of replacing the example clips as I've already watch a few tutorials on this very topic, however, as I've stated before I can't for some reason get the HD-Project to insert.

I have never used Instant Project, so I won't comment on those. However, I would simply note that your computer is below par for editing AVCHD. While the processor got good reviews in its day (released August 2008), editing, and above all playback, of AVCHD requires at least a decent Core 2 Duo process, as opposed to the Dual Cores which is slightly older technology. Part of the problem you are experiencing could be associated with that. The following quote from a review of the CPU is instructive in this regard:
The Pentium Dual-Core chips do have two primary drawbacks, though, which include 2MB of L2 Cache and absolutely no part of Intel's SSE4.x instruction set. What that means is that more expensive chips (even the E7200), will have the ability to recode video that utilizes these instructions much, much faster. For those who don't encode video all-too-often, the loss won't be noticed.
In your shoes, I would ignore Instant Project and instead use the full editor where you can use SmartProxy (which I am not sure is available in Instant Project). That is aimed at lower powered computers. In effect, when activated, Smart Proxy makes standard definition copies ('proxies') of your AVCHD clips. You then edit the proxies, which your computer should have not trouble doing, then, when satisfied, apply the edits to the high def originals.

Hi Ken,

While I appreciate your feedback, I have to disagree. I've been using the Sony Vegas Platinum 9 Edition to edit my AVCHD files and have had no issues whatsoever while editing, playing back files or even rendering my completed projects. I've been in touch with the Corel support team whom spent 3 1/2 hours removing codecs and programs that might possibly interfere with Video Studio (11 total programs), but I still am unable to work with the Instant Project. The support team is working on a resolution for me, but I find it odd that my system would work flawlessly with Sony's product without any tweaks and why I'm having so many issues with this program. They are ultimately in the same price category.

The primary draw to this program was for the Blu-ray authoring which doesn't exist in the Vegas Platinum edition nor does it exist in the next level Platinum Pro pack, it does exist in their Pro version which at that point I would just purchase Adobe Premiere if I were going to spend that kind of $. I've been editing MiniDV movies for the past 8 years so I'm not a newbie and I've got over 15 years of advanced computer skils (VB/ASP programming, SQL, MCSE and CCNA).

I'm not giving up as based on the reviews and the features for this version I would like to get this working properly. If you've got other thoughts I'd be open to trying them.
