When I try to capture via the capture card using avi (no compression) as the destination format, when playing back the clip all I get is a heap of horizontal lines, no picture to make out. I tried using compression by using the huffy codec, this allowed me to actually see a picture but the quality looked poor with a real linear thing happening.. saw tooth.. interlace type problem?? I am using upper field
Also I always thought I could previously (VS7) hear audio when capturing (new PC since), the output to file has audio when played back???? I have onboard audio Realtek AC97... not sure if I am missing a codec or just have a setting that needs a tick??!!
VS9 -Poor AVI capture and no audio??

Capture problems
Mine is also a built-in video and I get no problems with sound. Check your source if it's your capture device and not something else like a TV tuner card or a webcam.
Try reinstalling VS 9 but first, delete the entire folder where it was initially installed. Or better yet, use another folder instead of the accepting the default folder upon installation.

Before you uninstall and reinstall anything, make sure that you have the correct audio source selected in the Capture Options, and that the mixer for the audio device doesn't have the input muted.
You can also try Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Audio Recorder to see if that is able to capture audio -- that might help you eliminate UVS as the problem.
