VideoStudio crashes

Post by oldcelt »

Version: 10.0.0110.0

Having installed this and created a project, I then created a dvd - all worked fine.

Three days later I created a new small project but when I tried to create a dvd I got the following error message:-
"Do not support to burn VCD in DVD-R disc. Support to burn in CD-R/CD-RW disk"
The disk identifier shows DVD-R in red.

To test the setup I opened the project I'd completed a few days earlier and tried to create another dvd. This time it showed the disk identifier in black and started to prepare to create the disk. After about one minute the program crashed. No error messages were displayed except the standard MS o/s message asking for a report to be sent to MS.

Nothing has been installed to the machine since VideoStudio. A thorough check on viruses etc has been carried out and the machine is clean. Also, the registry has been checked and cleaned.

I tried a complete uninstall of VideoStudio, re-cleaned the registry, re-started the machine and re-installed VideoStudio. Exctly the same problems persist.

One is tempted to suggest that it may be hard to teach an old Celt new tricks!  But one trick we would defintely like would be for you to tell us a few more things. In the first place, what is your operating system and computer specifications? You are using VS 10, which is quite old now, and only works well with XP -- though it mostly worked with Vista with a special patch.

It would be extremely useful if you filled in the details under your Profile button. That way we would not have to ask all the time if you come back with other problems.

It would also help if you gave us in some details the steps you have taken and the type of video you have been editing. Moreover, is there any reason why VCD should even appear? How old is your DVD burner? What type of blank DVDs have you been using? Have you changed them recently such that the burner has difficulty recognising them and thinking for some reason they are not DVDs but CDs...?

From one Ken to another - many thanks for your input.

O/S is XP Pro, fully updated with all SPs and security measures. Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 10 GenuineIntel ~3399 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS P5VD2-VM ACPI BIOS Revision 0601, 12/12/2006

1. Captured a video from a Sharp Hi8 camcorder using EZ Grabber. That was edited and a DVD was created with no problems. The DVD burner is (probably) about 3 years old. I can't imagine why it matters if it performed perfectly the first time and then subsequently didn't, especially as other software can create DVDs with no problems.

2. Followed the same procedure for a small video (less than 10 minutes long); edited and tried to create the dvd with the results already posted.

Blank DVDs were bought 1000 at a time and no others have been used for the last two years (still have about 200 left). I can still record DVDs happily with Nero and, indeed have just recorded a 70% copy of the video I want using the mpeg (from VideoStudio) and a trial copy of SmartDVDCreator.

On the personal side, I'm a retired software developer who started in the business in the early seventies programming for CP/M then MS-DOS and, later, for Windows. I still take on small web site development projects from time to time to pay for my bad habit of spending 3 hours in the pub at lunchtime! :)

My mother's maiden name was Rees and my father was a coal miner: I was born in Nantyglo - have I left anything of importance out? 8)

Again, many thanks for taking an interest and for trying to help.
Sincerely,
Ken

What is your workflow? Are you going straight from the project in the timeline and clicking on Share>Create Disc? VS sometimes has problems with that workflow, especially in older versions.

It is recommended that, with your project in the timeline, you go to Share>Create Video File and render a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file. When that is completed go back to your timeline and choose File>New Project (to clear the timeline). Now, with an empty timeline go to Share>Create Disc. At the burn stage you will insert your MPEG-2 file into the burning timeline, where you can proceed to burn your disc.

Give this process a try and let us know what happens.

It would also be helpful to know what the properties of the 'problem' video were as it came out of the EZ Grabber... Could it be that it was captured in mpeg-1 format (which is what VCDs use) rather than mpeg-2? (Mind you, even mpeg-1 can be burned to a DVD...! )

Thanks a million Black Lab - that works perfectly. What more can I say?

Also, many thanks to all who offered advice. Ken

Glad it worked. 8) Nobody knows why the "obvious" workflow sometimes causes problems, but thank goodness for the workaround.
