VS PRO X2 sensitive to filename extension

Post by scubamut »

You need to be aware that VS behaves differently to loading a source file, depending on the filename extension. Here is an example of an AVI file containing an AVC (h264) video and PCM audio:

General
Complete name : E:\Videos\Diving\201003 Sodwana\Day 1\00012.avi
Format : AVI
Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
File size : 37.2 MiB
Duration : 51s 51ms
Overall bit rate : 6 116 Kbps

Video
ID : 0
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High@L4.0
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 3 frames
Codec ID : H264
Duration : 51s 51ms
Bit rate : 5 338 Kbps
Width : 1 440 pixels
Height : 1 088 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate mode : Variable
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Resolution : 8 bits
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.114
Stream size : 32.5 MiB (87%)
Writing library : x264 core 83 r1400 20fa784
Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=3 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=hex / subme=7 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=1 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=6 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / mbaff=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=0 / b_adapt=1 / b_bias=0 / direct=1 / wpredb=1 / wpredp=2 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=40 / rc=crf / mbtree=1 / crf=26.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00

Audio
Format : PCM
Format settings, Endianness : Little
Format settings, Sign : Unsigned
Codec ID : 1
Codec ID/Hint : Microsoft
Duration : 25s 460ms
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 1 536 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 16 bits
Stream size : 4.66 MiB (13%)
Interleave, duration : 40 ms (1.20 video frame)

Trying to load into VS as avi, result is:

Trying to load as MTS (the original file was MTS):

Yet loading as MP4 (or even WMV or without any extension at all), the video clip loads and shows "Properties":

Hopefully this may help explain some strange VS behaviour at times......

Scubamut,
Yes, handy to know . Could you explain how you obtained all the clip information prior to your first screen capture ?

The original clip was an MTS file from my Canon HF100 camera. I then use avidemux for trimming and color correction (I do a lot of underwater photography) as it's much faster than VS. I save the clip as an h264 mp4 without losing much resolution wise. Avidemux can also color correct my camera clips in batch mode. Finally I use VS to for movie making.

I found that VS won't load clips saved by avidemux with any audio format other than PCM, even though I can play clips saved with other audio formats (eg. ac3) quite happily in players such as media player classic, kmplayer, mplayer, windows media player etc. VS is VERY sensitive to both video and audio formats which it doesn't like, even though most other applications seem far less so.
