1. SUBJECT: Need help finding correct settings so I can import a video clip from ZD soft Screen recorder program.
2. Describe your problem:
I have used ZD Soft Screen recorder to make a recording of screen activity. Now I want to import into VS to edit it. When I do "file>insert media file to library" it seems to import it but then it shows up as essentially noise: random colored bars in the thumbnail.
There is a very long list of output format options associated with the screen recorder program:
camstudio lossless codec
canon motion-jpeg encoder
cinepak
DV Video encoder
ffdshow video codec
helix 1420 YUV
Helix YV12 UV
Indeo video 5.10 (and several other indeos)
Intel IYUV
H.261
H.263
RLE
Microsoft Video 1
Microsoft windows Media Video 9
MJPEG compressor
MSScreen 9 encooder DMO
MSU screen capture lossless codec v1.2
wmvideo8 encoder DMO (and 9)
x.264vfw - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
XviD MPEG-4
Will any of these work with VS 10+
3. What devices are involved and their mode of connection?:
No external devices are involved.
4. The Version of program is being used e.g. VS11+ VS11.5+ VSX2
It is some version of VS 10. I think it is 10+. Not sure how to find this version info in the program.
5. Please list all patches/updates that have been installed relating to that version of the program.
I don't know how to determine this.
6. Details of the source files.
File properties:
microsoft AVI file, 2.5 KB (very short file), 25 frames per sec, 161 seconds, data rate: 14.28 kbps,
Video properties:
compression= ffdshow video decoder, attributes=24 bits 1280 x 1024, total frames = 4,028
Audio properties
compression = mpeg layer 3
attributes = 56 kbit/s, 22,050 hz, stereo
total samples 3,532,482
note: since this is a recording of a screen, there is very little difference from one frame to the next, only the movement of the cursor for the most part, hence the data rate is very small.
1. Where did they originate (camcorder, internet, TV card etc) captured on the PC directly.
2. How did they get onto your hard drive (download, firewire, USB cable etc.) was stored directly to hard disk
3. Type of video e.g. MPEG2, DV, DivX, MPEG4 etc see above
4. Video data rate see above
5. Type of audio e.g. LPCM, AC3, MP3 etc see above
6. Audio data rate see above
7. Project Settings MPEG Files, NTSC drop frame 29.97 fps, MPEG files, 24 bits 720x480, lower fileds first, dVD NTSC 4:3
8. PAL or NTSC: NTCS
9. Did this error occur at the SHARE - Create Video Step NO
OR have you gone directly to the SHARE - Create Disc Step
(In other words you have a VSP file in the Create Disc Step) NO
10. Error Codes (if any): NO

Re: How to import a capture from a Screen Recorder in VS 10?
I would save it as DV Video Encoder. DV is a lossless format, and works well with VS.
