I think it's got to do with the Visual C++ library being used - I am using Vista x64 and VS seems to be using 32 bit VC DLLs ( specifically msvcr80.dll).
Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Welcome to the Forums!
The problem is that you have told us nothing about the properties of the video you are trying to render, or what editing you have done to it. Moreover, you have not filled in your Profile, so we have no idea of your system set-up.
VS was not specifically written with a 64 bit mode. However, there are quite a few users of Vista and Windows 7 64 bit who seem to have managed to edit and render their videos. So hopefully one or more of those might come along with suggestions.
In the meantime, anything more you can tell us about your video, editing and computer set-up would be extremely useful.

Sorry, don't know why my profile didn't show my system cofig which I thought I had provided.... I have now made sure it's in my profile
Video source is AVC/AC3 in AVI container.
After much trial-and-error, I discovered that the problem was with the audio format. VS showed audio as "unknown format". Changing the source audio format to PCM solved the problem. The msvcr80.dll crash I was getting occasionally appears to have been a red herring.
