Can someone clarify for me how apps like VideoStudio and perhaps others attach dates to their files? I'm somewhat familiar with metadata and EXIF.
In VS photos seem to be correctly sorted by when they were taken. Videos though seem to be sorted by when they were captured off my DV tape even though they were taken a few years ago. Is this normal? How do photos and videos differ in their date info tracking?
ALSO, I do have photos with incorrect dates even from the same collection. Any ideas how this would happen?
Thank you!

Photos of course have the EXIF data that most of the time will have the date and time each photo was recorded. This info is automatically added to the photo at the time the button is pushed on the camera. With various image editing software you can manually add information, and change the EXIF data.
With DV video, a time and date stamp is added to the video data. This is what VS looks at when sorting by date. VS however is not able to read or use time and date stamps on all video formats. If your original source video came from an analog Hi-8, there will not be any such data, and if it was converted to digital through a digital-8 camcorder, the date and time stamp would reflect the time that the video was converted.
Sometimes when transferring or copying photos the EXIF data may be misread or totally stripped. This data also various from camera to camera. My wife has a digital still camera that places a lot of information except the date and time.
