Anyone interested in rendering speeds?

Post by ruggy1 »

If not, read no further.
I have recently gone from an Intel P4 3.2GHz XP machine to an Intel i5 dual core 3.2Ghz W7 machine.
I have a test 34GB AVI file downloaded from VCR. The new machine has faster SATA 1TB drives, which is important, but I was astonished when I compared the rendering time on the old machine (to full quality, 8000k) which took 7 hours, to the new machine, which took just one hour. Each machine had 2 disks (read from one, write to another). Even though the new machine was fast it seemed to be hindered by the speed of the drives, as CPU load never seemed to get above 40%. Imagine if Corel actually used both CPUs - rendering would be a dream!
The new box cost less than US600 and it was truly worth it.
Anyway, I thought I would share my joy with you!

Did you build it yourself?

"New" computers - or rather new "Installations" tend to be faster.
Over a period of time various things tend to slow a computer down, these include things running in the background and also disc fragmentation.

To really speed a PC up you need to have an operating system installed on its own dedicated partition and tweaked so that it only runs things that are needed to carry out video editing tasks.
No internet
no anti-virus
no games
no Microsoft office.

By 'RENDER' do you meen create MP2 a video file ?

X3 runs fine on my puter... :D would run better if X3 was a 64bit application !!

I asked a computer shop to put the bits together for me.

Yes, I was rendering to MPEG2

Yes, old computer systems do slow down - I am convinced the CPU actally gets slower too, as one i5 core is only supposed to be 4 times faster than my old P4.
