New authoring module for X3

Post by Ken Berry »

Corel have just released the alternative authoring module for X3, in response to our complaints about the existing one. It is in fact a reworked version of Movie Factory 7 Pro, but now has the SE (Special Edition) letters worked into its title.

I have been one of the lucky people who have had the full version of MF7 since its original limited release. (For some unknown marketing reason, Corel limited MF 7 Pro to Asia/Oceania and possibly Europe.) I also acted as one of the Beta testers of this SE release. Like its predecessors it works extremely well.

The release, unfortunately for some, is being done by the same method as the other updates for X3: via the Get More function. I have not yet been given a URL where it can be downloaded separately. In fact, I am rather doubtful that such an URL will be released since Corel obviously wish to restrict downloads to those who have a copy of X3.

I suspect a downside is that for new users of X3, it will again take 3 days for the download of MF7 SE to appear. (This strangely enough will include me as I just bought a new computer yesterday, and have installed X3 on it. But as yet -- unsurprisingly -- I don't even have the template packs showing in the Get More tab! But I guess I can install the full MF 7 Pro on this machine...)

MF7 SE has a virtually identical appearance to the full verions of MF7 and its predecessors, and a close similarity to the burning module of VS X2 and its predecessors. It will thus be very easy for users of previous versions to use.

It should be noted that the main limitation of this SE version is that it requires the user to first produce a final version of a video in X3. Then you open MF7 SE and insert that video or videos for authoring as normal. It will not accept project files from X3.

Finally a DVD authoring solution that will not be as confusing.

Hope the download size will be reasonable and I also hope MF7 SE coexsist with DVD Factory Pro 2010.

It will certainly 'co-exist' in the sense that it is a completely separate program. So in future people will have the choice between MF7 SE and the inbuilt module. Some people might, indeed, prefer the inordinate simplicity of the latter. But most, I would suspect, would prefer the options presented by MF7 SE... At least I hope so.

I don't see this new authoring update in my "Get More" Is it coming to the USA (I'm in California). Is this one of those that we have to wait for it to show up in the Get More? I have a valid bought X3 version... Al

In fact, I think it was released from North America, and will certainly be available to all X3 users via Get More.

FWIW, I don't have access to it either and assume that it is another 3-day wait sort of thing. Mind you, I only bought the computer on which X3 is now installed a couple of days ago, so the three day period is not yet up.

I have already sought clarification on this point from Corel, and will report when/if I hear anything back.

Corel advised me 23 hours ago that it had already been released. It has not shown up on my current computer as it is brand new and I am thus probably stuck (again! ) with the three day rule. I have sought clarification from Corel whether or when it should show up on users' computers, but have not yet heard back from them. I will let people know when I do...

Here is a copy of the email I received from Corel to let me know of the release. As you can see the release is only intended for those who do not already have DMF7 as they do not need it plus of course the "SE" version would not be as powerful as the full version and so installing the SE version would be detrimental to those owning the full version.

Corel did discuss this course of action with the Beta Testing team and it was our view that this was the most appropriate answer to the problems being faced to users of VideoStudio X3 and its cumbersome new authoring tool.

Hi guys,

We just released DVD MovieFactory SE to X3 users via the "Get More" tab. Note: If a user already has this SW installed it won't show.

Not as far as we are aware. It is MF 7-specific...

I have had full version of x3 installed for over 3 weeks now. I do not have DMF installed. Tried the "Get More" tab and that just has the usual 2 tile packs and a number of font packs. Tried the "Check for updates" today and "No updates available" came up. Has anyone succeeded in installing the new software?

Have put this matter to Corel as a question. With tongue in cheek I suggested a slogan "DVD Movie factory SE is released but not available!"
I await their response!
I know Ken Berry wrote "I suspect a downside is that for new users of X3, it will again take 3 days for the download of MF7 SE to appear." But someone must get it before 3 days time otherwise what's the point of Corel announcing it now. Why not complete the procedure and say "It is now ready" in three days time? I'm an impatient old devil and I would sooner not know that it is launched than know but can't see it!

This morning, a patch was available, but it certainly wasn't MovieFactory SE, the alternative DVD authoring app. I think the patch was to fix the capture problems, as I can now capture from my capture card and USB capture devices.

I hope MovieFactory SE isn't as good as MF6 Plus with the HD plugin, as I just purchased MF6+ two days ago.
