Unable to change project settings in VideoStudio X3

Post by dptempid »

I just upgraded to VideoStudio Pro X3.

I have been using X2 for some time, so I am familiar with the software.

In version X3, I am unable to create a high definition project.
The maximum resolution I can select is 720x480.

Here are the steps I follow:

Edit>project properties>compression tab
The only options to select are NTSC DVD, or PAL DVD.
So the only resolution I can select is up to 720x480 in the general tab.

In version X2, I could select MPEG 2, instead of just NTSC DVD, and then select resolutions up to 1980x1020.

In the X3 help files, it also says that when you import a video clip, X3 should automatically adjust the project settings to match the video clip. This does not happen when I insert video of either 1440x1020, or 1980x1020. The project properties still remain 720x480.

Also, when trying to do a batch of project conversions using the batch convert feature, I cannot choose high resolution options. Even if I select custom, I cannot change beyond 720x480.

Interestingly, I can fool the software if I load an old X2 project file into X3. One that I know I saved in 1440x1020. It shows the correct project properties, once loaded. However, it is set to PAL DVD. And if I try and change it (the only other option is NTSC DVD), I only get 720x480 option again.

If I just ignore the project settings, and click on Share>Create video file, I can select one of the pre-set file types, like HDV or Mpeg 2, or Blu-ray. The output settings are correct when I check them, but again, I can't create a custom output file, and change the settings beyond 720x480.
If I use the mpeg optimizer, it choosed the correct output format to match my first video clip ok, but I can't tweak it, or change any parameters, like compression settings. I want to set it to 100%, as I could before.

Very strange.
I sent a message to Corel, but they just said to re-install the software.
I have tried installing the demo version from their website, and activating it, vs using the download link in my purchase email.
Same thing.
It seems to be stuck in DVD mode somehow.

Is this a feature of X3 that anyone has been able to use?
Specifically, can you just open a new file, and set your project preferences to anything you want, including 1980x1020?
You could with X2.

I can successfully create Blu-rays with the added software that comes with X3. So this part works fine.

I would appreciate any help, thanks.

I only have those project property settings available also.
The important part though comes when you go to the [Share] tab [Create Video] Here you will find that the settings you want are already present.

I was going to reply in much the same vein as Steve. In effect I have basically ignored the Project settings for quite a few years now. In reality, as Steve suggests, the only important settings are what you use when you are actually outputting a new file in the Share process.

Unfortunately, I never use batch conversion, so I am unable to suggest what you might do in that case.
