Im hoping you might be able to tell me what im doing wrong.
I've got my VCR on. I've got 3 av plugs coming from the (VCR - Out_ and going into the camcorder. I've got my camcorder going into the computer via firewire. I start the VCR and hit play, I turn on the (empty - no tape) camcorder and hit play.
When i try to capture the video via VS11 or MS movie maker it doesn't work????
Any suggestions?

Your camcorder may not have "pass thru" capability. What I was saying was doing two separate steps:
1. Connect the VCR to your cam as you have, play the VCR and record it to your cam.
2. Then you connect the cam to the pc and make the transfer.

No, I just checked online and your JVC has DV In. Check your manual for instructions. Is it possible that my camcorder does not have the capability to record from my VCR?
If you are going this route and you can capture AVI I would do so. Keep in mind that if that is uncompressed AVI then you are talking huge files - 65GB/hr. If it is DV-AVI then that is about 13GB/hr.I am going to use a usb capture device from vcr to computer. When i open VS and go to capture, the options are: AVI, MPEG,VCD,SVCD & DVD. For best quality which should i use?

Most cams come with their own DV cable, so you can plug your cam straight into your TV. In fact, I don't know of ones that don't. It usually will have one mini plug that goes into the cam, then on the other end will be the yellow, red & white that goes into the TV, VCR, etc.
Check the Provided Accessories. DV cable is a Yes.

I found out that one of the 2 camcorders can be used as a pass through. I hook it up and start the capture in VS11. It looks as though its working and 15 seconds in it stops, with a message that says the capture failed, the file created is corrupted and unusable and will automatically be deleted. ????

That avi maximum size represents 15 minutes with PAL and 12.5 minutes with NTSC. Since WinDV captures by splitting by scene, it would be unusual that any one captured file would exceed those limits. But if you think you have one very long video on your camera where there is no change of scene, then simply increase the default upwards.
As for the Nth frame setting, I personally have never touched it.
In other words, on both points, my advice would be just to accept the defaults and let 'er rip, so to speak!
