Sharing full HD (AVCHD) with VideoStudio

Post by monnerat »

Hello,
I use VideoStudio since 2001. I am now planning to buy a full HD camcorder that records videos in MPEG-4 AVCHD H264. I believe I can, but I want to be entirely sure it will be possible to edit the clips with VideoStudio (my present version is Pro X2), then create discs and finally burn DVDs, also with VideoStudio, using that same format?
Thanks

You don't tell us anything about your computer system, so we don't even know if it is capable of handling AVCHD. You require at least a decent Core 2 Duo processor to be able to play AVCHD smoothly. You can edit it using SmartProxy if you have to, but anything less than a Core 2 Duo will simply not play AVCHD smoothly...

That being said, yes, with a good computer, you can edit AVCHD, and produce AVCHD hybrid discs on standard DVDs. I have produced quite a few using X2 with no problem and they play beautifully on my HDTV via my PlayStation 3. Tudo joia! And even the awful authoring module in X3 will do so (as well as burning an AVCHD hybrid folder, which is something X2 cannot do. It can only burn an actual disc.)

I suppose you realise that to play these hybrid discs, you need a Blu-Ray player which is rated to play a hybrid disc. Not all Blu-Ray players are so rated.

Boa sorte...!

Hi Ken,
I agree of course that X2 has no problems to create AVCHD discs, but where I am still confused about is what you mean that "X2 can not produce an AVCHD hybrid folder". Do you mean an ISO file? What I did many time is, apart from creating hybrid DVD's to be played back on my Blu-ray player, I regulary create rendered AVCHD files and put them on my HD multimedia player, which works perfectly. But I suppose this is not what you mean by an "AVCHD hybrid folder". For what specific purpose would I need this folder?

I, for instance, have my main editing computer networked to my PlayStation 3 which is connected via HDMI to my HDTV. I can make an AVCHD hybrid disc and play it on the PS3. But to avoid having to make the actual disc, I could make a hybrid BDMV folder on my computer if that were possible to play that via the network on my HDTV. X2 will not allow the creation of such a folder (not an ISO hybrid file). But X3 will.

I still don't see why I need a BDMV folder. When I don't need an hybrid AVCHD disc for playback on my (or anothr's) BD player I just make an AVCHD file .mpg 1920x1080) on my local PC HDD or on my networked 1TB HD multimedia player (A.C. Ryan PlayonHD). This multimedia player is connected (hdmi) to my FullHD home TV. I can playback straight from the 1TB internal MMplayer HDD or stream fullHD AVCHD video from my PC HDD through my network an play it back with my MMplayer. So Ken, can't you just stream an AVCHD files from your PC to your PS3 and play it back on your TV? Or does your PS3 only process streamed BDMV folders?

No -- it is only a matter of presentation. With X2/X3 I can make a menu for the presentation. That is all. Sure, I can -- and do -- play my edited AVCHD and HDV directly over the network.

Hi erdna
Just to add my experience, I always produce a BDMV folder as I can then check the video before commiting to a disc plus I can get a good 30 mins of HD on a standard DVD disc. I just use Burn Aware to create a data DVD and just burn the BDMV folder to the disc. Takes only a few mins. Very quick. I create short videos for a Horse sanctuary charity that I do volunteer work for and often get asked for an extra copy of a video. This is the most convenient way of doing just that!

monnerat -- I know nothing about running VS on a virtual machine. However, that being said, if your iMac were a PC, it would certainly have the capacity to edit and play AVCHD...

Oi Ken,

Thanks again for the promptness and the guidance. I have both experiences: running VS on regular Windows environment and in a virtual machine. It is exactly the same thing with only one difference: when you end Windows in the virtual machine, it ends but the iMac computer continues running.

Now I know I can buy the full HD camera.

Bom saber que fala portugues
