Picture-in-Picture...how to?

Post by billludwig »

I don't understand the FX Picture-in-Picture instructions where it says to "Place the Picture-In-Picture effect on the clip that should be inserted in the background and place the background track behind it." I have a background clip, and an embedded clip, but how do I place the background track behind the other clip?

Thanks,

- Bill

For example, in a news cast you have the video of the newscaster, and you want a PiP of a fire scene over his shoulder. The clips of the newscaster goes on the main video track. The fire scene goes on an overlay track, and the PiP filter is applied to it.

By background track NewBlue is talking about the overlay track. To me, their terminology is "backwards" because the main video track is behind, or underneath, the overlay track. But that may be because their effects are made to work with many different editing programs, and I'm sure each of those programs calls similar things by different names. I wouldn't be overly concerned about the terminology as long as it works.

And it does, extremely well. I am only a novice with it myself, and am sure I have only got it to do no more than 10% of what it is capable of doing. It is a very powerful tool, and some of us here think it is almost worth the upgrade price of X3 in its own right just to obtain it...

I guess I don't understand how picture-in-picture is any different than just using the overlay track without picture-in-picture.

Also, when I use picture-in-picture, it makes the embedded picture a lot smaller than normal.

As far is the PiP, it is not any different. But what the filter does is add motion, effects, shadows, etc.

As far as the picture size, you can adjust it same as you would any clip in an overlay track.

Thanks, Jeff -- I understand....BUT, as soon as I drop the PiP onto the clip, the outer 'frame' stays the same size, but the picture is reduced by about 1/4 the original size. If you have a colored border around your clip, that just doesn't look good. HELP!

To use the New Blue FX PiP, you need to apply the Full mask to your overlay clip. Rather than type out full instructions, and since a picture is worth a thousand words, have a look at this tutorial on New Blue FX for VS X3..

Picture in Picture.

You can access these tutorials from VS X3, click on the Corel Guide button in the upper right corner, then on the Learn button if it doesn't open up to it. At the bottom click on Vimeo. It takes you to the video tutorials for VS X3.

FX PiP effect

Post by Luna Esterhuizen »

I saw the tutorial video and found so much more that I wasn't aware of.

But I found the PiP effect when used in the main video track could be very handy when you for instance want to just add text around your Image or video

One thing that I still do not understand how it works is the little red markers that are put (automatically I think) on the sliding bar (below the preview window). How do you get rid of these markers and how do you control them. What do they do? This is the only thing , so far, that I must learn. Otherwise it's a wonderful addition to VS.

preview range red line

Post by Ken Veal »

If you are taliking about the preview range red line.......
The red line represents the Preview Range and shows as a line in the
Ruler Panel below the Preview Window.
This allows you to play only part of a project.
If a mark in/out point is selected in the Project mode you will only be able to see
the video inbetween those points.
To remove the red line, (which was inserted whilst in the Project mode by setting the in or out points)----move the black triangle(trim handle) below the
blue bar at the bottom of the Preview Window that is on the left to the start
of your project .
Then click on [ or F3.
Move the trim handle(black triangle) on the right all the way to the end of your Project and click] or F4.All this must be done in the PROJECT mode.
The above method is one way of trimming a clip in the CLIP mode.
Page 40 of Video Studio 11+ manual refers to the Preview Range
