Motor.... I have the exact same problem and am using VS 9!
Have tried various settings. The sony Digital8 was recorded in 16:9 widescreen. When I view the captured mpeg, if I captured in default 4:3, the video has a flashing portion of the widescreen video under the regular video. If I capture in "widescreen" per ulead settings, the Wide screen is distorted and REALLY widescreen. Anyone with any suggested settings I missed?

I had a similar problem with widescreen rendering. It turned out to be "non-square pixel rendering" The only way I can create a good looking widescreen .avi or DVD is to turn off (deselect) the "perform non-square pixel rendering".
If I forget to do this than an .avi looks too compressed in the vertical direction when viewed on my pc and a MPEG-2 DVD played back on my tv has black bars on the top/bottom AND the left/right along with a noisy looking image.
