Windows Explorer crashing when I open a folder containing MPEG-2 files
When I try to open a folder within Windows Explorer that contains MPEG-2 files, I get message " Windows explorer has stopped working will restart¡¨. I think it is because Windows cannot show a preview of the file in the icon.
I'm using the Vista Home Premium and VS X2 Pro /VS X3. Anyone know a fix to this problem? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, have you done anything recently to your computer which may have affected the codecs? I had the same thing happen a few years back -- and I think with Vista -- when the whole computer would choke when I would try to open an mpeg-2 file captured with my then Winfast TV card... I recall having to restore the mpeg-2 codec...

Thanks for your reply.
Ken, I think you are right and there is a problem with the software used for video playback on my computer. Recently I installed VS X3, and I also tried to play an AVI file using Windows Media Player, which may have affected the codecs. I can open old folders within Windows Explorer that contains MPEG-2 files. However, I get message " Windows explorer has stopped working will restart¡¨ only when I try to open mpeg-2 files captured two days ago with VS X2 or VS X3.

I talked to Corel Technical Support and I was told to update video and audio drivers and DirectX. I did both, but I still have the same problem.
I get message " Windows explorer has stopped working will restart¡¨ when I try to open recently captured mpeg-2 files.
Ken, do you remeber how to restore the mpeg-2 codec or fix the problem? By the way, I also uninstalled and reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack and the problem is not resolved.

Did you work your way through the suggestions in the above link. In particular check your hard drive(s) for errors with the chkdsk command.sjj1805 wrote:Begin here:

In fact the more I think about it, I think I was working with XP at the time. There was a Microsoft tool, whose name escapes me, that would check all the codecs -- audio and video -- on your computer and would indicate which would work best with your computer. In my case, though it detected VS mpeg-2, it said the Cyberlink mpeg-2 was better. It just happened that I had a couple of Cyberlink programs so reinstalled those and the problem cleared up.
Regarding your reference to K-Lite, we usually recommend against installing the whole pack. Those sorts of mega codec pack are thrown together with an eye to quantity, rather than quality. Many of the codecs conflict with each other. That could have been your problem in the first place. I personally would have uninstalled the K-Lite altogether, then reinstalled VS (and its codecs), then see if the problem was still there. If it were, then I would look in the long K-Lite list and select one or two mpeg-2 codecs and see if they correct the problem.
