PC using Windows 7 crashes when VS Pro X2 & IE8 are open

Post by snoopcat »

I have an Intel 915 MB running win 7 & 1GB of ram. An ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card. I installed Windows 7 several months ago & Pro X2 soon after. I have automatic update. I don't know which version of Direct X I'm using. How do I find it?

My problem is: I can run IE & VS at the same time but if I do anything in IE while VS is running the system crashes. Any ideas?

For the record, I have been a member of this board for several years & began with videostudio 7. Last week i began to have logon problems & was not successful having a new password sent. I don't know if it was my fault or an issue with the foum but I had to make up a new user name.

With Windows 7 you definitely have DirectX 11.

I am wondering if your problem could be related to the fact that you have only 1 GB of RAM... X2 can be pretty demanding of resources, especially if you are processing high definition video...

As for your log-on problems, we do regular sweeps of the membership lists and tend to delete those which have not used the forum for a long time. I don't know how regularly you used it, however, so cannot say whether this happened in your case...

Win7 IE8 problem

Post by snoopcat »

Hi Ken

Thanks for replying. I checked & I do have directx 11. However, I may no longer have the problem. After my post I realized that I would soon be asked for the "event viewer" report but I neglected to check it after the earlier crashes. I haven't had any crashes for several weeks because I've learned how to avoid them so I decided that I would have do do it deliberately. I started VS & began to surf the net but nothing happened, no matter how much i tried. I don't know why it seems to be ok now, maybe a windows update took care of it (I have automatic update). If it comes back I'll look at the viewer. As far as the 1GB ram issue goes-this Motherboard is 5 yrs old & no longer supported by Intel. I'm going to upgrade to a more state of the art model in april & see where I stand.

I think that you are right that my logon issue was caused by the long space between my postings.

Thanks for the help.

There was no need to check -- Windows 7 only works with DirectX 11!  You could be right that an automatic Windows update fixed whatever might have been the problem -- I have noted a number of recent updates target IE8... However, just so you know, the automatic updates do NOT update DirectX. Whenever you want to update it, it has to be done manually, and even then it is not a completely straightforward exercise.... There is a sticky post up at the top of this board which gives the most recent updates to DirectX, which contains some elements applicable to DirectX 11...

When you buy your new machine, you might want to think about updating your Profile with the new system specifications. That way, if you have any future questions, we won't have to hassle you for details of your system and set-up... 8)

Why would you run Win 7 with 1GB of ram?

Are you running 32 or 64bit?

This could be your problem....

Why would you be running ANYTHING else when you are using VideoStudio?
Video Editing is one of the most demanding tasks that can be placed on ANY computer (Except Accolades - he is the exception that proves the rule!)

In fact it was due to this that I created the following post.
Creating a Video Editing Profile.

Problem with Vista / Windows 7 is you cannot create a hardware profile and so you can only implement those suggestions to a limited degree with Vista / Windows 7.

PC using Windows 7 crashes when VS12 & IE8 are open

Hi Ken:
Your advice is well taken. I will check out the directx sticky.

I am still running with 1G of ram because the tech place where i bought the pc told me, when i wanted to upgrade it from 1 to 2G that i didn't need more than 1G . That was about 2 1/2 yeara ago.

I'm running 32 bit.

Steve: I really like your editing profile. I'll implement it the next time i do editing.

Thanks to all for replying.

BBut be aware of Steves advice here:

IE8- Windows 7

Post by Luna Esterhuizen »

I just want to ask something while you are discussing snoopcat's problem. I run Windows 7 Prof Ed and my IE stands on ver 8.0.7600.16385. I do Windows live updates, but each time I open IE it asks me do you want to upgrade to IE 8. So I just press "Ask me later"

At my office I have Windows XP and some time ago when IE prompt me the same question I experiences severe problems with my PC, so I rolled back my system with a system restore to time before updating to IE8.

I now see that some of Corel's tutorial Videos does not support IE 6 so I have to update some or other time.

But yes my question is why do I get the prompt for updating to EI8 while I have that installed with Win 7?
