Converting videos has been my only salvation until now
Hi Everyone
Like most of you good folk I have experienced the full range of VS8 frustrations but until yesterday creating video files has not been one of them!
I have been busy converting analogue VHS to digital using my Canon MV630i using the recommended workflow (I think)
Yesterday I got the "failed to encode the video" for the first time in ages. The project is a movie only about 100 minutes long. I captured DV Type 1, edited with the same properties and only changed to PAL DVD (variable bit rate of 6000) at the create video file stage.
These properties are exactly the same as the many previous successful projects.
I know there is a restiction with the Win ME 4Gb maximum file size but VS8 has always split the video files into 2 if the total has been >4Gb anyway and this has never been a problem when burning.
I have searched for "failed to encode" posts but is there any anaylsis or rationale for them?
What do you do if you follow the workflow and the workflow doesn't work?
Many many thanks
Antonio, Anna y Eduardo Felipe

Hi,
This is the method I use to split the Mpeg files.
How to Split Mpeg Video file Output into set file sizes using VS8:
1. Import the video mpg file etc
2. Goto Share -> Create Video File
3. Choose Custom
4. Uncheck "Perform Smart Render"
5. Click on the "Compression Tab"
6. Click on "Advanced"
7. Click on the "MultiPlexer Settings" (Tab on far right)
8. Manually type in the file split size in MEGABYTES
(10 = 10,000kb = 10,000,00) So type in 50 for a 50 Megabyte split point etc.
9. Click with the mouse anywhere's in one of the other boxes to
activate the 3 available checkboxes below the file split size selection box.
10. When the 3 boxes are active then check all of them ON.
12. Click "OK"
13. Click "OK"
14. Give the mpg2 file a name, click "OK" and let it rip.
Should also work for dv to mpg2 rendering.
Used this method in VS8 to span a dvd across CD's
and haven't tried it in VS9 at all.
Hope this helps,
MD

I think that WinME is your big problem. The file size limit is preventing you from making the disc.

Many many thanks for your advice
I will persevere!
BTW Torsten My experience is that VS8 does split the files during render. (or at least it used to)

And for those who wonder if their eyes are going bad, be aware that the Advanced button is normally not exposed in Videostudio. To gain access to it, locate the UVS.INI file (normally in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\9.0), and add the following line to the [VIODRIVER] section:
Advance=1
Yes, that's Advance, not Advanced. Restart UVS, and the button should now appear.

quick question. Are you saying that by using this method you will be able to have VS8 render DV-.avi files to sperate .MPEGS of any size you specify ?
Thank you MD and thanks THoff for how to make this feature operable by adding the the line to the .ini
