I am having problems with VS10 burning DVDs since changing my DVD burner (windows XP pro SP2). I had no problems with my old Pioneer DVR115D up until it failed completely. My new one is a Pioneer DVR118L. When I get to the burning page in VS10 I put the DVD in (verbatim DVD-R 16x) then I have to wait up to a minute before it recognises a disc has been inserted. During this time task manager says not responding, once it recognises a disc has been inserted I click on the small disc symbol, again I get not responding but after about 15 seconds it starts up. Once it starts burning it goes through normally and the discs are ok. This also happens with MF3. I thought the new drive might be faulty but it works perfectly with Nero6. Has anyone any ideas please.

Did you install any software when you installed the new drive? Maybe there's a conflict?
As a work-around, you can choose Create DVD Folders instead of burning an actual disc, and then use Nero to burn the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders to disc.

I didnt install any software or drivers, I was told I didnt need to, was I given the wrong advice. I use this computer to capture cine films frame by frame, to keep the speed of it as high as possible I dont have any virus protection installed so it has never been connected to the internet. Windows XP was installed with SP2 from disc and has never been updated, could it be that the drivers have to be updated to cater for this new burner.

Could very well be the burner's firmware needs to be updated.

I can second the suggestion by Jeff (Black Lab) and had that exact same problem when I had to swap a Pioneer DVD Burner. Before the original burner broke I had no problems burning DVD discs. I had to replace the burner after a foreign object found its way into the tray and so bought another Pioneer DVD burner.
The new one wouldn't burn anything, but I then went to the Pioneer Website and found updated firmware for the new burner and it fixed everything.
Whilst you might think a new burner is up to date, it may have been manufactured quite some time ago, sat in a warehouse and then in the back of the computer shop for quite some time before it found its way to you.

I have now downloaded and installed the latest firmware but I still have the same problem. Although I dont think the drive is faulty as it works with Nero with no delays I think I had better try another one. I have always used Pioneer in the past, for a change I have seen a Samsung one advertised in CPC does anyone know if they would be as good as the Pioneer ones or is there any other makes I sould go for.

If you have Nero then why worry.
Prepare your Video DVD but burn it to either a hard drive folder or an ISO file - which is a matter of personal choice though I prefer the Hard Drive Folder method because I can then give it that last quality check with a software DVD player before burning to disc.
Then use Nero to burn that hard drive folder or ISO.
Just make sure you choose the Video DVD option and not the DATA disc option.
