Is it only the trial limitation????

Is it only the trial limitation????
When I chose share and create a video file then custom... the compression option are only PAL and NTSC DVD.... in x2 there was mpeg2 option which allows creation of HD video files but it is no longer there.... I'm working with the trial version and wonder if this limitation is only in the trial version... can somebody with the full version clarify this problem?

If you go to Share > Create Video File > AVCHD this will produce your HD file in MPEG -2 format. Is this what you are loOking for?harhash wrote:When I chose share and create a video file then custom... the compression option are only PAL and NTSC DVD.... in x2 there was mpeg2 option which allows creation of HD video files but it is no longer there.... I reviewed that method but it gives you much less options than x2's custom where you can alter the frame rate, bitrate... etcmitchell65 wrote:If you go to Share > Create Video File > AVCHD this will produce your HD file in MPEG -2 format. Is this what you are loOking for?

I have just got home after 2 weeks in Europe ... and could look again at my X3 installation. I confirm as I said above that in fact when you choose Share > Create Video File > AVCHD, that creates a high def mpeg-4, not an mpeg-2. To create a high def mpeg-2 you would need to choose HDV as the file output. But of course you can't do much with that apart from burn it to a Blu-Ray disc or convert it to an AVCHD hybrid disc as noted by mitchell65...
You also haven't made clear why you were wanting to go the Custom > mpeg-2 route to produce a HD video file, instead of using either the AVCHD or HDV output routes...

I believe that AVCHD is not such a grown up format for editing... in most available software editing leads to great loss in quality and bitrate.. so your only chance is to merge your files using some method of smart renderer and burn them to blu ray or AVCHD DVD.... but sometimes I may like to edit my clips and add some sharpening, titles etc... and my only way for that is to convert the clips to mpeg2 which is mature enough to perform editing without loss of quality... it will also allow me to obtain 24p output from the 60i original clips in my canon's HF200 which shoots 24p embedded in 60i format...

Far be it from me to query those with much more knowledge than me but I have analysed one of the files I created in AVCHD. It is in M2TS format and using "Super" I get this analasis.
ID : 4113 (0x1011)
Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@High
Format settings, Matrix : Default
Duration : 50s 920ms
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 29.4 Mbps
Nominal bit rate : 35.0 Mbps
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16/9
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Interlaced
Does the bit in red not denote a MPEG 2 file?
If so all my HD files from my camera are already MPEG 2 and I think the OP will have the same. He has a similar camera albeit the next model up!

That's what it says, but by definition (check it on Google, Wikipedia or anything else) the .m2ts used on AVCHD cameras is H.264/high def mpeg-4... HDV is .m2t (i.e. without the final s) and is mpeg-2...
The problem is that the .m2ts format is itself only a container, though a relatively limited one, and in the Blu-Ray context, the .m2ts format can cover mpeg-2 high def files. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it -- but note the final para re AVCHD:
"Codecs
The M2TS container format used on Blu-ray discs can contain one of the three mandatory supported video compression formats MPEG-2 Part 2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC or SMPTE VC-1[10] and audio compression formats such as Dolby Digital, DTS or uncompressed Linear PCM. Optionally supported audio formats are Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and Dolby Lossless.[7][11]
The M2TS container format used on AVCHD equipment is more restricted and can contain only H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression and Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio compression or uncompressed LPCM audio."
Was the file you analysed by any chance from a Blu-Ray disc?

Thank you Ken for your most informative reply.Ken Berry wrote:Was the file you analysed by any chance from a Blu-Ray disc?
Answer: Not from a Blu-Ray disc but from the Blu-Ray folder that I created from one of my clips in VS x2. I have just double checked that and completed a fresh instance. Taking a single clip from my camera, inserting into timeline, Create Disc, Blu-Ray, Create folders. Then analysed in Super.
This is what I get when I analyse a clip straight from the camera:
ID : 4113 (0x1011)
Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High@L4.0
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames
Duration : 4s 200ms
Bit rate : 14.3 Mbps
Width : 1 440 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16/9
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Resolution : 24 bits
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Top Field First
I am beginning to feel this is getting too complicated for me

Indeed, as it is for me!! Believe me!!!
But the new properties you provide and especially the ref to "Format profile : High@L4.0" confirms to me that it is high def mpeg-4. That is also the format which is given for other high def mpeg-4 formats, including the one that continues to use the avi wrapper, namely high def DivX in the latest version 7 of the codec...
