adding sub-titles

Post by david rafky »

I am a newbie, so please excuse me if I ask one or more seemingly dumb Qs. I am a refugee from Movie Maker v2 -- although I never did get it to work for more than a few minutes at a time.

I am using the basic version of MovieFactory v6 and everything seems to work as advertised. So far, so good.

In developing a genealogical history of my family I came across some old film which I sent to a lab for transfer to video tape and then to DVD.

1-How can I add sub-titles to my movie? I have clips of family members and I would like to add brief sub-titles indicating their names upon their first appearance so viewers will know who they are. I could not find any references to sub-titles in the manual. However, I did see references to them in the help file. So, if it is possible to add sub-titles, how can I do this? (Please, in very simple terms.)

2-I would like a brief description of the movie -- its actors (i.e., family members), where and when it was made, etc., at the beginning. Would I accomplish this with a "menu" or is there some other way? Nothing fancy, mind you, just some info for and about relatives appearing in the video. Sort of like the FBI warning and "Cast of Characters," at the beginning of a movie.

Thank yo in advance.

Hi David, and welcome to the forums,

I think in order to add titles/subtitles over your video, you need the Plus version. It has what's called the Edit Room, where this is done.

The built in subtitle feature of MovieFactory is very basic and only allows you to add things like the time/date the video was shot or in the case of a photograph its name.

You need to use a separate program to generate subtitles.
You can use a dedicated sub title program such as
DivXLand Media Subtitler
or
Subtitle Workshop

Details can be found here:
Free Stuff for use with Ulead Products

If you have VideoStudio then you can create your sub titles using that program as per the tutorial I created here:
Create Subtitles with VS11+ for use in MF6+ (Video)

Sorry but I am still in the days of standard definition which I am quite happy with. Have not yet found an excuse to spend lots of money on upgrading everything.
