Ripple Editing - Am I doing something wrong

Post by meinthecorner »

I have just completed a small project that includes a a number of overlay video tracks, voice tracks and titles.

I have now been given a little bit more video that needs to be inserted around the middle. When I insert the whole clip all the other layers a moved down the time line as I was expecting, however when I try and use the Multi Trim tool, I get a warning that 'Ripple Editing will not be applied in this action'

Am i doing something wrong? The solution I have at the moment is to add the new clip at the end of the timeline, trim it, then move the trim sections to the place in the time line they are required. Is this the normal way of going about it?

That's correct behavior, as you would be changing not only the duration of the clip you inserted, but more importantly the number of clips inserted. So VS has no way of knowing just how you want the clips in other tracks moved. I would suggest trimming it first. You could do this in another project, then either render the trimmed clip (File Save Trimmed video) or save the project (vsp) file, and insert them into your main project, between the clips..

Thanks for the confirmation, just didn't want to be going down a long route when I could have simple been missing and option somewhere!

Hi

If you just want to remove frames from the beginning and/or end of the clip you could do this from the library.
Then drag the trimmed clip to the timeline. The scissors will also work in the library to create seperate clips.

Or
From the timeline, instead of using Multi Trim use the scissors to cut and the square brackets (mark-in / mark- out) to trim the ends, rather than delete.

You may find this option overcomes some problems associated with ripple editing.
It does overcome the auto removal of the transitions.
