In the summer I saved lots of footage using VS10 to an external drive. The integrated graphics card on my laptop then went wrong and I ended up getting a new laptop - decided to download pro x2 which now won't allow me to view/edit the files. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I have also just sent for pro x3 upgrade at £23 as I have only just purchased pro x2 - was pretty cheesed of with this- anybody else experienced this and how long did it take to arrive? Thanks

Newer versions of VideoStudio should open older version VSPs, so X2 should open a v10 VSP, although the reverse is not true. Are you getting an error message?
As for just purchasing X2 and then X3, did you contact Customer Service to see if they would offer some sort of rebate?

Might help us to help you if you could provide a little more information Tales.
Can you see the files on your external drive in Windows Explorer, what file extensions do the files you wish to retrieve have. Can you play the video files in any other player you have on your computor (Media player/Movie maker)

Re: Accessing files saved with previous versions
I had the same thing with VS x2 projects not opening in VS x3. My project files were stored on an external drive too. So I dragged the VSP file from the external drive to my Desktop on the new machine, then it opened. I then saved it back with the same name to the same folder on the Ext hard drive and from then on it opens OK. I then deleted it from my desktop. Pain really but you need only do it once for eack VSPTales 68 wrote:In the summer I saved lots of footage using VS10 to an external drive. If you stored on an external hard drive it would have assumed a drive letter according to what else was connected to the old laptop. Possibly a card reader or some other media storage unit. With the new laptop that same external drive has taken on a different drive letter. Just determine the drive letter and relink as requested by VS. Better to give the external hard drive a dedicated letter late in the alphabet like "V" for video. Then it doesn't get changed by the lower letters that get assigned automatically unless you have 24 or so external drives then I don't know what you doTales 68 wrote:Thanks for your replies - will try as you advise mitchell65 - i can view the files with media player. They are AVI files - when I try to open them I just get 'orig file doesn't exist' relink etc

that was the bit of information that we needed - just do exactly as mitchell65 advises - if you have never had to relink before all you need to do is click on the "Relink" button in the "file doesn't exist" box then browse to the file indicated by the error message and click on it and then on 'open' and with a bit of luck all files will relink - if you are not lucky then just repeat the relinking operation for each file.
