Trial version purchase and backup copy?

Subject: Trial version purchase and backup copy?

Background:
***********
I am new to painting Microsoft Flight Simulator aircraft.
I have downloaded the one month free trial of PSPX2.
I have one week left on the PSPX2 free trial.
It is working well for me so far.
During my trial of PSPX2, PSPX3 came out.... naturally! ... another choice to make?
The orders people told me I can no longer get PSPX2 on CD because PSPX3 came out during my trial period!

Anyway, my only choices now are:
1. Get a purchase key for my trial copy of PSPX2.
2. Purchase PSPX3.

The questions:
**************

If I get a "Purchase key" for my trial version PSPX2, can I do my own "one legal copy backup" instead of paying fot the

Software Download Insurance?

If so, what file(s) do I need backing to back up?
I have these files in the folder I used to initially run the setup from.
I cannot remember which one was the trial download file.

ycomp_setup_core.exe 740KB
setup.exe 310KB
installer.exe 274KB

And will there be a "key" and license file that also will need to be backed up?
I found one license.rtf in my C:\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 folder for the trial version.

From my understanding the backup insurance is something in case your computer crashes or worse yet get's a virus. But there's nothing stopping you from burning the files to disk, as many disks as you want. It's the license to use the software that you pay for.

If you buy the boxed copy, you get a disk automatically. Usually the cost of shipping is close to the cost of the 2 year insurance. I have a disk from 4 years ago. Still works just fine.

What you don't ever want to lose is the product key. You can usually find download copies of the actual software, but the product key is unique and specific to you. Don't lose your product keys. I had to lecture my wife a couple of times about this. She'd get a program, put all of the disks into a zippered disk holder then throw away the packaging, sometimes before even using the product key for the first time. Nothing worse than paying for something only to throw it directly in the trash. Well, I guess the only thing worse than that is to have the disks staring you in the face every time you open that zippered disk holder.

df is correct. If you register your copy of PSPX2 then your product key will appear in your account information. But always keep a back up.

I'm not sure if any of those EXEs are the Paint Shop Pro one, as the appear to be for smaller programs or downloaders for larger ones and I don't recall Corel using downloaders before. But if you want to know which is which just run them and see what they try to install and then cancel the install.

As df said, you have every right to backup the setup onto a disk.

Because of the number of problems that people have been having I've actually begun to recommend to people to wait until Paint Shop Pro X3 has had an update before downloading it. However, if you're willing to try it and it works well on your system you might consider getting it. When it works it's not a terrible little program :D

My opinion of the "Back up insurance" is that it is something Members of the National Apathetic Society purchase so that they don't have to spend the time doing it themselves!

Please see...
Lost Serial Numbers and Software.

Oh.... by the way, It was the Annual General Meeting of the National Apathetic Society in London last week - no one turned up!

Steve,

First up, thanks to all for the replies. Much appreciated.

I am good at keeping all purchase information including serial numbers/keys.

After I convert my PSPX2 30 day trial download to a purchase, the follow up questions are:

1. Will there be a "key" or "purchase" file on my hard drive to back up?

2. Is there a specific file on my computer, like an original setup file, that I can use to later reload my complete PSPX2

package by just executing this one file?

3. Or, do I have to back up all the files in the Corel folder?

You need to preserve the original set up file(s) plus any Serial numbers and/or activation keys that you were provided with.
When you activate a TBYB version it will be the same sort of thing in Paint shop Pro as it is with VideoStudio.
Please view:
Install and Activate VSX3

In addition, as per my other link, keep copies of any emails, electronic receipts, even a snapshot of your Bank Statement showing they have taken your money could prove useful at a later date.

Steve,

Thank you for your help.
The last link you provided explainted the missing bits I asked about.

I had copied the original set of "set up files" for the 30 day trial to a backup folder on my PC.
C:\PCSoftware\CorelPSP-freetrial
I will back up this folder to CD now for any emergency use at a later date.

This is what my TBYB "set up files" folder looks like for trial PSPX2 and it does have a setup.exe file:

From there it installed the full Trial PSPX2 software into this folder on my hard drive:
C:\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 on my hard drive.

I suspect that all of this discussion will be pointless, because now that X3 is out, you won't be able to buy an X2 key. The only option if you want X2 is to buy a boxed copy.

Tim,

Thanks for the followup.

I opted to purchase X3 instead of the X2 trial deal.

So I never found out if the X2 key was still available.

But, the X2 product was already on my PC and the Key to activate it was $59. I had always assumed they would have honored the trial and sent me the activation key. No need to download anything.

I backed up the downloaded PSPPX3 exe file (>400MB) , my order number and serial number to CDROM.
