boxes instead of letters in posts

Why do I keep getting boxes in posts intead of letters or question marks
when I have typed brackets etc................Ken

I don't know what you mean. I've not seen any boxes in your posts. If you're wanting to use BBCode, then you need to make sure that you're closing them properly, and you're using the correct tags.

Once in a while actual squares and question marks appear in place of characters for almost no reason. Similar to showing unicode characters in a program that only understands ASCII. I've seen it a few times but not always.

You dont see them because I edit the post and resubmit , but next time it happens I will leave it to show you

Those characters began to appear when the Web Board was "Repaired" about 2 years ago following an attack by a spammer that took the board down for about 2-3 weeks.

This Web Board will be upgraded soon and should be more reliable and robust than the one we are using now.

The 2 question marks show but I typed full stops only.

I pasted the above post from a word doc and as you can see the h
that should have been in how has posted as a box and the last 3 question marks were typed as full stops now as well

That is because of a mismatch between the character encoding of your browser and this page. In Firefox you can change it by going to View > Character Encoding. It will be something similar in other browsers.

I think you hit the proverbial nail on the head when you said you pasted from a Word doc. MS Word is full of its own coding which stays with it when you copy and paste. Loads of people have trouble with is when they copy and paste a word doc or part thereof to a website. This causes no end of problems. The reason is you are pasting a heavily formatted piece of text then formatting it again through the website or this Board which as you know has its own format. We can alter that format through the inbuilt editor. To overcome this save a word doc to a Plain Text file which has no formatting, and use that to copy and paste.

It is a fault in the PHPBB forum software.
I am in discussions with Corel about upgrading the web board to PHPBB3 to try and alleviate this a few other problems with the Web Board.
