Moving a selection box

Post by iantresman »

Can I move and/or resize a selection box without moving its content? Sometimes I don't draw it in exactly the right place.

Yes, look on the Layers Palette to the right of the X (delete) there is a square with brush icon. Hovering your mouse over it reveals the tool-tip Edit Selection. Press it, and you can move, resize your selection without affecting the contents..;)

Brilliant, that something I've been meaning to resolve for years. You would have thought that right-hand clicking on the selection would provide this as an option. I see also that it is available in the Selection menu, but I guess I've never had a selection specified when I've tried it before.

Thanks.

Now that I can move my selection box, can I size it? There are lots of measurements on the Toolbar (Pivot, Position, Scale, Perspective, Shear and Angle), but I see no width and height.

With the Pick tool you can resize, move, and rotate. Just grab one of the handles on your selection and drag it. To rotate it, use the line extending from the center pivot point. Your mouse cursor should change to the 2 curved arrows.

Indeed, but can I set the exact size, eg. to 640x128 pixels.

No that's not possible that I can find. This is something Corel needs to implement in the program. The only way to resize is by dragging the handles on the sides and corners. You must then watch down in the lower-right for the sizing.

Thanks for taking a look. The bottom right corner does not seem to show the size of the selection.

I think I can create a selection from a vector object. So if I create a rectangle of known size, I can then create a selection from the Vector object. Not ideal.

I guess another one for the Wish List.

If you know the exact size when you begin with the selection you can set a box (I can't get it to work on other shapes).
After you click your selection tool there is an icon to the left of the "Create selection from" section called "Custom Selection". You can use that to input Top Left Right and Bottom values. If you leave Top and Left at 0 then you don't have to try to do math and guess where to start and stop a selection.

Not ideal, and yes it's another thing for the Wish List.
