i did do a search on this and found some advice.
i'd like it to become more clear

is the first idea (above) nesting? if not kindly clear it up for me to understand

BTW... is nesting really a bad idea anyway?

The first way is "Nesting" and it is OK to do it that way.
You ultimate aim is to render once and so nesting is a good way to help achieve that aim.
You cannot edit a nested project, you would have to return to the earlier project to edit it further. Otherwise a VSP acts and behaves as a rendered video.
