Download Manager for Trial Version

Post by woodchuck »

I would like to download a trial version of VS X3 before I decide to upgrade. Because my broadband is satellite I have to download large files between 3AM and 6AM. I have a download manager so I can schedule large downloads while I sleep. Unfortunately, when I went to download VS X3, Corel said not to use a download manager unless it was theirs. Does Corel have their own download manager and where do I find it? I assume it would be free.

Thanks Tevor,

I used the link for TBYB and the Corel Download Manager was activiated. Unfortunately there was no way to schedule the download for later. I started the download using the Corel Download Manager and the estimated time was over 9 hours! So, I don't believe I will be trying or buying a download version of VS X3. I wish I had an alternative to satellite but unless I move, I'm stuck.

When I downloaded previous versions of VS I don't believe there was a restriction on downloading. I was able to download the file during the night and install it the next day.

Thanks for you help.

9 hours! - you still got a 28k modem?
You will probably find it takes 30 mins to a hour, there might have been a lot of network traffic when it gave you its initial estimate.

Unfortunately, I only have a 512 kbps broadband contract, and it took over 4 hours each to download first the Beta, then Beta 2, then the TBYB and finally the Download version... I'm pooped, not to mention my computer!

With my satellite provider, Hughes.net, I am lucky to get download speeds of 75 - 90 Kbps during peak hours. When I started the trial download yesterday it was during a very slow time so 4 - 5 hours is probably more realistic. Hughes has something they call "Fair Access Policy" that limits downloads to 200mb during a 24 hour period. The hours of 2AM - 6AM are excluded from this restriction. If a person exceeds the download threshload, their speed is severely restricted for 24 hours. This has happened to me and it is almost impossible to do anything for 24 hours.

I schedule all software updates for the excluded hours. If I could schedule VS trial for 2am it would probably finish before 6. I might get up some night around 2AM and start it -- we'll see.

I sympathize with you woodchuck :( I had to use Hughes.net back when it was called DirecWay. My choices were dial-up 28k or that. It was much faster than dial-up, did not tie up my phone line, however very expensive. You must purchase the equipment then the monthly rate. You did not dare exceed the bandwidth quota, or you might as well forget about using the internet for the rest of the month. I think their "fair use" is not really all that fair. Thankfully I had to move, and now I have 3 MB ADSL.

I might give the AutoFTP a try, Steve. Or I might ask my son who has cable broadband to download it for me.

You are correct, Ron, Hughes is certainly expensive but it's my only option.
