That didn't work either. It said something about the windows installer service, and wouldn't let the program even start to install. (Deep breath)... I'm just going to reload windows. It's a week old installation, and this is the second problem program. Might as well start fresh before going any farther. Sigh.

I'll come back and let everyone know how (well) it went once I'm done redoing windows.

Are you saying the windows installation is only a week old?
What I would try next are the following in this order.

1. check your hard drive(s) for errors using the /F switch
From a CMD prompt
chkdsk /F

2. Check your Windows System Files
From [Start] [Run]
sfc /scannow

3. Run a memory checker.

4. IF all of the above do not resolve the issue
check your hard drive(s) for errors using the /R switch (This takes a long time - overnight is best)
From a CMD prompt
chkdsk /R

5. Still no good - do an "UPGRADE installation of Windows - this will preserve all of your current programs, files, passwords, settings etc.

6. Still no good - then you would have to try a Fresh Installation of Windows. This is a LAST RESORT - it can take several days to get your computer back with your various other programs that will have to be installed again.

Once your computer is working correctly I would suggest that you use a program like Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, Paragon Drive copy
Here is a list of the Top Ten so that next time you will be able to restore your computer in minutes rather than days.

I had some problems with that xp install and was in denial. Just wiped it clean and restarted. SO much better. Trial updated like it should with no problems. Opened both X2 and X3. Will do some testing in the next day or so looking for blips. Thanks for all your help. Made it easier to just bail on that install and start over fresh.

So did you format your HD and re-install Windows?

Yep. Everything. When you rely on as many different video editing programs as I do you wipe at the first sign of trouble. Starting off clean is always preferred.

Yeah, gonna do a drive image today.
