Unable to start capture graph message.

Post by wstagner »

Does anyone know what this error message means?
VS 11.5+, VS X2 pro are the versions I've tried.
Panasonic MX3000 cam is connected via fireware to my P3 Windows XP system.

VS has no trouble finding the cam but as soon as I select capture, the error message pops up.

TIA,
Walt

Are you just trying to capturing DV directly from the camera, or have you changed the capture format to mpeg-2?

Or are you trying to use the Panasonic as a pass-through device to capture analogue video e.g. from a VCR or analogue video camera? If you are trying to do this, then neither VS 11/11.5+ nor X2 (nor X3) can do it.

Have you tried capturing using either Windows Movie Maker or the small freeware program, WinDV, which a number of us here use? If so, what is the result?

Just plugged a firewire cable into the dv port on the cam to direct capture.
I want to capture from the tape into VS.

Apart from telling you to manually update DirectX from the Microsoft website, there's not much more I can say. If you can capture OK in WMM, then use that for capture, and open the captured DV in VS for editing.

Note that DirectX is not part of the automatic updates of Windows. You have to do it manually. But it seems to correct quite a few problems in VS which seem to be caused by *other* Windows updates!

Yah, I'm running SP2 on the VS pooter. Direct X is version 9 from last August which appears to be the most recent.

I'll try reinstalling Direct X and report back.

In their infinite wisdom Microsoft calls it DirectX August 2009, but it was released in September. :?

It's best to install it just to be safe.

I would stick to what works and not spend time worrying about it.
You can capture with WMM then import into VideoStudio.

For what its worth I capture all of my video off my camcorder with MediaStudio Pro.

Walt,
I get the same message but under different circumstance. I have an ADSTECH capture device that was bundled with it's own CapWiz software and also VS 9 SE. I recently upgraded to VS X2 and I am unable to capture no matter what I have tried. With X2 and 9SE both installed on same computer I cannot capture, even with the supplied CapWiz. When I uninstall X2, I am again able to capture. Corel tech support says I should still be able to capture with 9 SE and claim the two programs are not sharing any files. After several email support tries and finally telephone support, Corel advised me that with my capture device, I will have to use two computers. So I currently have X2 only on my desktop and the ADSTECH capture software on my laptop. I capture with the laptop to an external drive then load it into X2 for editing. Your mileage may vary. But don't expect much help from Corel. I updated DirecX even.

It's curious that CapWiz won't work on a computer with X2 also installed on it. There are other users here who have no trouble with that workflow. You can't capture using the Adstech device and X2 since Adstech is one of those companies that refuses to share its proprietary secrets with Corel. But CapWiz has worked, regardless of whether successive versions of VS are also installed.

The VS9SE version bundled with the device should indeed be able to capture, but may not be compatible with Windows 7 and certainly was not with Vista. It was tweaked by Adstech to work with the device, though its main purpose was still editing, whereas the Capwiz was the main route for capture...

Yes, it's all very strange. One thing I do notice..when X2 is installing, watching the files being extracted and all, very quickly I see a folder wiz by that is a ULEAD folder and files, which of course VS9SE was ULEAD at the time, not Corel. The CapWiz capture worked perfectly since I've had it since, 2006 I think. The sadest thing was the Corel phone tech telling me you need two computers.
I should clarify, CapWiz SEEMS to be capturing. It previews just fine. When you actually record, the preview screen still looks/sounds fine. But when you playback the captured file, at approximately 6 min. 30 sec, the audio on the captured file drops out, never to return, but the video is fine. That was another thing the Corel tech said, is that the ADSTECH device is NOT designed to capture audio !! Umm...but it has the audio jacks for input and has worked fine all this time. And this problem is found in videohelp.com
